How much heavier can he get!?!

I'm sorry if I'm repeating something that has been on a previous thread, I did look but I couldn't seem to find the right thing.

Here goes, ds2 is now 9 months old and weighs 25lbs and 1oz, and my back is about to give way!

The HV has said to me to try and cut down all bread, pasta, potatos etc and I have, and now he eats lots of fruit and veg, meat and dairy products, but still his weight increases.

He is not crawling yet, he bum-shuffles, and has crawled backwards a couple of times, so is it just his lack of activity or is my back going to be permently bent over from his weight!!

Please have any of you had this problem, I want to know that I'm not turning him into a little tubby boy!

Well neither of us are huge in size, I'm 5ft 7inches, and dh is 5ft 9. We are both slightly overweight, I don't think this is the answer though.

When ds2 was born he was 8lbs 12ozs, ds1 however was 10lbs 5ozs and weighed a little less than this by this point, I must check that out actually.

I just feel that I don't know what more I can do for both of us. He also still has 4 milk feeds a day, I'm still bf and the two during the day are quite short feeds.

Fairy, how old is ds1 now? I'm assuming he is now into or past the toddler stage and walking, has his weight evened out since being more mobile? If so, I expect your ds2 will probably burn off more energy once he finally gets moving, but the sooner the better for your back, I guess!

If it's any consolation, my nephew was a very, very big baby - and never crawled, just rolled! However, the minute he started walking the weight dropped off. He is now a beautiful, tall teenager and, if anything, a bit lanky.

robinw - do not agree with you about extended B/F causing obesity. Neither does WHO who recommend feeding into the second year. Fairy's baby is only have 2 feeds a day anyway so that is not causing a weight problem.

Heavy B/F babies lose their fat much more quickly when they are mobile. Fairy do not expect your baby to lose weight. He will continue to grow and gain weight and if you keep feeding him a balanced diet, his size will balance out.

DON'T WORRY fairy!

My ds was 10 lbs at birth and was the biggest fattest baby in the world! People used to laugh at his wobbly legs and creases in his arms and wrists and at his chins!

At 9 months he was 26 lbs!

He didn't slim down until he started walking at 14 mths. Also, when he was more in control of how much he ate his weight gain slowed down even more.
He is still a big boy, he is 2.9 years and is 35 lbs so he has put on 9 lbs in 2 years! The main thing is that he is very very healthy. Better to have a hefty healthy lad than a skinny sickly one hey?

sammac · 01/09/2002 12:52

My ds just turned 9 months on Friday and he too weighs about the same. He is off the chart for his height and at the 98th percentile for his weight. He only has 3 milks a day and his food is mainl fruit and veg ( home-made ). He is a big boy - but he is not sitting with rolls of fat.
I am reassured that when he starts to walk he will lose it all. Both of us are tall- dh is 6'3.Dd is positively skinny!

SoupDragon · 01/09/2002 13:57

I've had 2 chunky monkeys - DS1 was 10lb 1oz at birth, DB2 8lb 4oz (2wks early). DS2 was 24lbs at 9 months and DS1 was similar. They both slimmed down when they started to walk and DS1 is now a completely average toddler. DS1 was bf til 12 months, DS2 til 15 months ish. Neither are obese!

My only advise is to beg, borrow or steal a Hippy Chick. It's like a solid bum bag which your baby sits on rather than you trying to carry them on an arm and your hip. Much better for your back. I borrowed mine from a friend and it's been a godsend - I simply could not carry DS2 by 9 months! Recommended by osteopaths too as it distributes the weight more evenly.

My oldest daughter was only 6lb 6oz at birth, but put on weight so quickly she was soon off the chart too, and looked like the michelin man with all her jelly rolls! We saw a dietician who was happy with her food intake, and then referred to a growth clinic. They basically just weighed her and pinched her fat every few months, saying that until the age of 7 they tend to just observe because children usually balance themsleves out. I stopped taking her when she was about 3 because it seemed she could go back at 7 if there was a problem. She is very slender and much taller than children of her age now (she's 10) and I look back at those pictures thinking how darned cute she looked!

We had a joke that DD was doing modelling - for Toby Jugs and Buddhas! R

KMG · 01/09/2002 18:28

Do you watch the diets of these chunky babies, and make sure they're getting plenty of fruit and veg.

I read this thread expecting to say - don't worry, my ds was the biggest, chubbiest boy we knew at this age, and once he started crawling and walking the chubbiness fell off and he is now a slim 5 yr-old, though tall for his age.

However, I checked his book, and at 9 mnths he was 'only' 21lb 12oz - way off your figures. So I am a bit concerned about the weights some of you are talking about. Can you get them to stand up long enough to measure their height, and see if the weight is on a similar centile line to their height?

fairy · 01/09/2002 23:50

Thank you all for your replies.

SoupDragon, have tried to find a hippy chick on ebay and they have none, so I will carry on looking. I can't really afford a new one at the moment, does anyone know someone who wants to sell theirs?!?

Mears, I don't expect him to lose weight now, just stop putting it on!, he is beginning to even out a bit more, but even more would be great.

Jodee, ds1 weighs 18kgs, so he is only just over the 75th centile, when he was 9 months 22lbs 8ozs, so just below 91st centile. So all this info does give me hope, I guess I'm just panicing.

robinw, I intend to carry on bf as long as possible with him, I stopped at 8 months with ds1, and I want to improve on that as much as I can. Also it is far easier for me to carry on at the moment, too lazy to sort out bottle feeds!!!

I guess another problem I have with ds2 is that he will try and eat anything, as long as he can eat it with his fingers, he doesn't like stuff off a spoon at the moment, but that is another story!!

Thanks again

Robinw, I think you are wrong about more than 12 mths bf being asociated with obesity.

Most of the world feeds for far longer than 12 months and most of the world does not have our western problem of obesity.

If you have a reference showing bf for longer than 12 mths is a risk in the developed world then do share it.

ariel · 02/09/2002 13:17

My first ds who is now almost 7 was 7lb 13oz at birth and by the time he was 8 months he was well over 25 lb.He is now very tall but not fat he wears age 10/11 clothes and has size 4 shoes, he does look alot older than 7 but he certainly does not need to lose any weight, by contrast my 2nd dd is 4 1/2 and is tiny she just fits into 2/3 year old clothes. I was allways adviced never to deprive my ds of any food, within reason.
