Will popcorn stick to buttercream?

Need to make a cake with popcorn stuck to it next week. The actual recipe uses a cooked icing that involves sugar syrup and needs to be eaten on the day, ideally. Ain’t nobody got time for that on a party day so I was just going to use normal buttercream. However - will my popcorn stick to it or will it fall off and the cake look like it’s got a case of the pox?

Thanks!

Try it! With a small amount of buttercream? Don't see why it wouldn't stick really 🙂

the reason the recipe says it needs to be eaten on the day is that normal popcorn will go soggy within a few hours of being subjected to any kind of moist icing.

I think a buttercream would work fine, but use toffee popcorn which is completely coated with a hard shell of sugar. that will hopefully protect it from going soggy. (yes doing a pre test is a good idea)

I was hoping someone had already done it so I didn’t have to testGrin

I can easily stick the popcorn on on the day - I want to do the buttercream/icing bit the night before so the day itself isn’t stressful and I’ve got time to make a horlicks of it....

Fab, thanks all. Will knock up some buttercream and get testing!

If you do the buttercream the day before then it will probably crust overnight and not be sticky. So I'd buy (or make) some edible glue to stick the popcorn on as last minute as possible...
