Breakfast when no time to eat at home?

SC10 · 03/11/2019 13:42

I am currently able to eat my breakfast (porridge) at home in a relaxed way but am moving house soon and will have a long commute to work on public transport so will have to leave for work very early.
Can anyone suggest any nutritious breakfasts I can eat on the way as I won't be able to eat it once I get to work?

Porridge.

You can buy porridge pots.

Or if environmentally minded, porridge in a thermos

You could make a bircher style muesli or overnight oats in a screwtop jar or kilner jar and eat them on the way. The consistency is quite thick so it won't slop or dribble if you are eating on the move. The good thing abotu this is you can really vary it. A version I love at the moment is black cherry overnight oats. Just mix the oats with milk, a drop of almond flavouring and a scoop of frozen black cherries. leave overnight. Stir in the morning and decant into travel jar.

Or leave the oats to soak with grated apple and cinnamon or pear and ginger or banana and vanilla. (Add the banana in the morning so it doesn't discolour.)

Banana sandwich on wholemeal.

Cheese and tomato toastie on wholemeal made at home and wrapped in baking paper. DS2 has this someitmes and then eats it on the train as he can't always face breakfast first thing.

Eating breakfast on public transport is gross

DH does a Smoothie with oats/nuts/protein powder/chia. Includes veggies. Goes easy on fruit and juice (some kind of milk or just a nut butter + water).

Or flapjacks made with mashed bananas and nut butter rather than golden syrup and butter.

Overnight oats! I stick oats, yogurt, almond milk and frozen fruit in a bowl/Tupperware in the fridge just before bed and they’re perfect in the morning.

If you want hot porridge you can soak the oats in milk overnight and just zap for 1 min in the microwave in the morning for super creamy porridge.

When I used to have a long commute then I found the problem wasn't finding time to eat before I left, it was that if I ate my breakfast at 5.30 a) I didn't really want it and b) I was starving for lunch by 10.30. I often ended up eating four meals a day that way, which I think is one reason I put on weight doing that commute (the other reason was that it massively increased the proportion of my day I spent sat down).

Get a wide mouth food flask for your porridge.
Or make a sandwich and some fruit to eat on the way.
And maybe a travel mug for a hot drink on the way in and home.

Nigellas breakfast bars are great.

I can make them by eye now plus you can vary the ingredients. They keep for ages so you can make a big batch and just grab and go. They are lovely with a cup of tea/coffee.

My current favourite is cherry and almond.

Thank you so much for all the helpful replies, I really appreciate it.
I am going to be travelling by buses and may not always get a seat so will have to see how everything works out and the easiest and most discreet way to eat something but thank you for all the great ideas.

I have a Sistema breakfast pot which is very handy - the night before I put yoghurt, frozen fruit in one bit and granola in another, then on the train I combine and eat with the folding spoon. But best when you have a seat!

I get the bus to work. Can always get a seat though. I do overnight oats in a travel soup mug, ping it in the microwave before I leave, Chuck some fruit and yogurt on top. I usually eat it half hour after leaving and it's fine.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 04/11/2019 20:13

I just gave up eating breakfast. I'm no hungrier by lunchtime than I was when i ate breakfast first.
And if I am starving mid.morning then I have a piece of fruit.

sunnyflowerblooming · 05/11/2019 09:50

granola with greek yogurt or overnight chia pudding could be an option

MrsRedFly · 05/11/2019 13:58

Nigella's breakfast bars are great - i change to tropical flavours!

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/11/2019 14:00

Depends what time you set out really. I often have a 5am commute and so wait to eat until I arrive to work - will usually go to a pret or boots and eat a sandwich.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 05/11/2019 14:07

I've got a small tub and put some Greek yogurt in, followed by porridge oats, then another layer of yogurt, frozen fruit and a bit of honey. I do this the night before so the oats soak in the yogurt. Really filling too and easily eaten on a train

BigSandyBalls2015 · 05/11/2019 15:47

What about breakfast muffins, make up a tray of them on a Sun night and stick them in the fridge. Savoury ones, with onion, bacon etc
