yeah should be fine. or even water

SoupDragon · 25/09/2004 19:15

I've used breastmilk in the dim distant past.

TracyK · 25/09/2004 19:17

prefer to use milk over water - just to up his milk intake - but I didn't know if bm would curdle or something at being heated in a pan.

Breastmilk is fine to cook with although you can use cows milk in cooking.

i used cows milk at a friends house a week or so ago and gave ds the runs! don't know if that means he's intolerant or just not used to it??

Or could have been coincidence. Try the porridge made just with water? Personally that's how I prefer it, anyway, myself.

I used BM a couple of times but found it didn't really heat up properly to make the porridge with (actually mine was readybrek and the milk has to be boiling so maybe that makes a difference)I used cows milk after that.

TracyK · 25/09/2004 21:07

thats what i thought as you are sposed to simmer it for 5 mins or so.
maybe i'll stick to banana porridge - cold and from a packet!

Fwiw, I agree with zebra - I always make porridge with water and then add the milk afterwards. Please don't feel you have to use the packet stuff - imho it's far more expensive, and besides if you make it yourself you can flavour it with whatever you want. Ds1 had bananas, dried apricots, raisins or pureed apple stirred in depending on what was around and what I felt like.

Do you have to blend it after cooking too? I tried it with my ds unblended and it was spat back out again in disgust!

A friend's dh made white sauce and served it to guests. He used "the milk that was in a little bottle in the fridge"...in other words a bottle of ebm.

Apparently it tasted fine!

I only used breast milk in the very early days of weaning when only a small amount of liquid is necessary. As soon as my children were used to taking food from a spoon I used cow's milk for everything. Obviously I didn't give it to them to drink but every HV I've spoken to has said it's fine for mixing with cereal, rice, etc. and to make sauces.

I used bm because I was a bit paranoid about allergies (me having eczema, asthma, rhinitis, nut allergies) and didn't introduce cows milk even in cooking until dd was 12 months.

The bm works fine - I had a huge stash of it in the freezer and used it to make oat porridge, millet and quinoa porridge etc etc. Also used it in mashed potato etc.
