Am planning to make my first ever bannoffee pie & have studied various threads on here. my first mistake was to buy 'light' condensed milk but i see that is a 'no no' froma nother thread so now have the 'full fat' stuff. recipe on tin for b. pie and for filling it says 'melt butter & sugar in pan then add c. milk and stir until it makes caramel' doenst say how long this takes . There are also dire warnings on tin about boiling it unopened being v dangerous etc etc. Have to admit i'm a bit nervous about that bit!
Any thoughts?

I always boil the condenced milk in the tin for 4 hours which turns it into caramel/toffee and i make the pie with a cheese cake base.

Make a tiny hole in the tin before boiling.

Thanks marne, I think you;re the first to say make a small hole in tin. Do you mean like the initial 'stab' you;d make with tin opener?
I assume this means you need to be careful not to let water go over top of can as it would get into tin?

It's much nicer if you boil it int he tin.
But I guess if it burst it'd be a PITA!

I also put a small hole (yes like the initial stab with a tin opener) in the tin and boil it for about 4 hours as well.

I keep the water level about 3/4 of the way up as the heat from the water will warm the entire tin and then you don't get water in the hole.

Yep, just with the tin opener, try and stand the tin up in the water so water does'nt get in. I have boiled it without a hole and it has been fine but if you are worried just make a tiny hole. If you boil it out of the tin it tends to catch and you end up with dark streeks in it.

i cheat and buy the toffee filling in a tin!

Oh Marne, I wish I'd thought of that! I boiled it without at hole and it was fine but I was petrified.

Been making it for 15 years, I boil with no hole for around 2 hours.

Never had one burst (boiled dry a few unwatched pans though), always allow to cool before opening.

Or use jar of Dulce De Leche as a shortcut - as recommended by Mr Oliver.

They are on now and have been for 2 1/2 hrs. Decided to do 2 at a time as recommended on another thread and keep one for another time. Have been brave and not put a hole in tin so i can keep pan really full of water and not worry about it leaking in! Going to do 1 for 3 1/2 hrs & 1 for 4 hrs and see if 3 1/2 is enough. if it is i might do the next ones for a bit less! Thanks again everyone
