What should I do with Blackberries from my garden?

Just seen the red currants one and I need to ask about my Blackberries.

I normally would have had time to cut back, but this year they have gone mad and I have loads in the garden.

Suggestions as they are washed and sitting in the fridge?

yum - give them to me
Blackberry & apple pie?
Blackberry cloufoutis (sp?)

Can't you just eat 'em?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 14/08/2007 21:42

Are your blackberries ready yet? Round here they're not ripe yet.

Spidermama · 14/08/2007 21:42

Blackberry (and apple) crumble or pie.
If you've got loads how about jelly (ie seedless jam) as that'll keep. I can dig out my recipe if you like.

Blackberry fool is also nice.

Dh wants me to cook them. I used to eat them happily but he says I need to heat them to get rid of wormy bits!

when we had ours, I used to eat all the really juicy ripe ones with ds whilst picking them, then freeze the rest to have throughout the rest of the year in crumbles etc.

Furball · 14/08/2007 21:47

I just used to freeze them flat on trays, no blanching. then put them in a bag and it was easy to go and grab a couple of handfuls etc,

Wormy bits????

luckylady74 · 14/08/2007 21:50

could make and freeze compote with apples and spices - good for breakfast with yoghurt or puddings with icecream/brandy baskets

Peachy · 14/08/2007 21:52

dont worry trinity, I reckon it was legend (as much as with any fruit), just I ahve a wor,m thing so that was it for me

BirdyArms · 14/08/2007 21:52

Can someone enlighten me about the wormy bits please? One of my most painful childhood memories is 2 of my friends telling me that I was disgusting for eating blackberries straight from the bush. Did they have a point?

onlyWotz · 14/08/2007 21:54

I can't ask him right now about wormy bits, as he is watching James Bond

I get rid of the "wormy bits" by soaking them in very cold and fairly strong salt water. They don't seem to like the combination and wriggle free and die, mwah, ha, ha.

Leaving worm free blackberries that dont need to be cooked.

startouchedtrinity · 14/08/2007 22:17

Wriggle free????

Made these with blackberries from Grandma's garden - bloody marvellous and the kids loved 'em! I used oatbran as well as flour - you could use just flour. Also I used slightly less honey, I guess adjust according to taste. The original recipe said caster sugar but I prefer honey.

Blackberry Oaty Muffins
2 oz (60g) rolled oats
9 fl oz (260ml) milk
6oz (225g) plain flour
2oz (60g) oatbran
3 teaspoons (15ml) baking powder
3 teaspoons (15ml) runny honey
½ teaspoon (2.5ml) salt
1 egg, beaten with a fork
3 fl oz (90ml) vegetable oil
6 oz (170g) blackberries

  1. Prepare muffin tins. Preheat oven to gas mark 5-6 (190°C - 200°C).
  2. In a medium sized bowl, combine oats and milk. Set aside to soak while you prepare the dry ingredients.
  3. In a large bowl, sift together: flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Now add to the milk and oat mixture, add beaten egg, honey, oil. Stir sell.
  5. Pour all of the wet mixture into the dry. Stir until just combined and no dry flour is visible. Batter will be lumpy, do not over-stir.
  6. Add the blackberries and stir in gently.
  7. Fill muffin cups and bake for 20-25 minutes, until tops are lightly browned and feel quite firm to the touch.

Nigella's hot blackberry sauce with white chocolate ice cream is gorgeous. I make up large quantities of it and freeze it.
