Mine ds who is 14 months drinks about 12 oz milk per day. Is there a minimum they are supposed to have at this age? any advice welcome, thanks.

My son is also 14 mths & drinks the same at the moment but I feel he ought to have more. He has milk 1st thing, in addition to milk in cereal, then the rest at bedtime. I think about a pint a day is advised - I'm going to ask HV later this week. I'll probably go back to offering him milk at dinnertime aswell so I'm sure he's getting enough. Failing that, I'm sure that by offering other dairy foods will help keep our little ones well nourished but it's best to check with HV. I know for sure my son'll never refuse a 'petit filous' yogurt or pieces of cheese!

I think around a pint a day is recommended buttercup, but remember this will not necessarily need to be drunk - yoghurts, cheese, sauces etc all contain milk, which adds towads the daily total. 12 oz is a really good amount - my dd is still refusing to let any cows milk pass her lips, so we rely on what she eats (she's fifteen months, and has also recently decided she doesn't want to breastfeed any more either - tho' that had been dwindling awhile....) - I noted she gets about a third of a pint of milk with her ready brek alone!
Best thing is not to get too hung up on whats recommended - just go with the flow.

Hi Buttercup, I read that a toddler as yours should try and get at least 16-20 oz a daily of whole milk. Older children are needing more for their bones.

I'm lucky if my DS gets 8 oz as a drink I'm afraid. I find that weetabix is the cereal that soaks up most milk so give him that most mornings. Also do the dairy in food thing.

Hello all. My 15 mo son does not want cows milk at all! Has anyone had the same problem? Will he get enough calcium with yoghurt, cheese, etc??

Bozza · 29/08/2002 11:19

Andrea as my post below shows I am not doing too well on the milk score and it has got worse over the last couple of days although maybe because DS has been unwell. Will he have cereal? I suppose the calcium through other sources depends on just how much you manage to put in his diet. I suppose try to be creative with milky ideas. Try him with rice pudding perhaps.

Bozza and Andrea3369 - I think I'll join the club. Dd (15 months) flat out refuses to drink cows milk (or formula of any kind), and as posted below, just decided to give up her one breast feed per day.
Feel I'm not going to get all bothered by it tho' - she'll make up for it somehow, and I can't force it down her neck. so, we have lots with cereal, lots of creamy sauces, yoghurts, cheese etc. I also sometimes give her the danone activ water with added calcium. Other than that, I'll wait 'til she's ready

thanks for all the replies which are really useful. AFterwards I found a similar thread from quite recently and had expected to be referred there.

Anyway there seems to be a lot of variation. Infact my son in the last few days has suddenly almost doubled his intake of milk which I feel happy about as it hasnt affected his appetite. One pint a day seems to be a useful guideline though.
