Defrosting chicken

saintshar · 23/09/2004 11:40

I am having people around for tea tonight, and this morning (9a.m to be exact!) i took a chicken out of the freezer.
It says on the chicken to either defrost in the fridge overnight, or to defrost at room temperature, but not in a warm room.
Well as i am not at all organised, so only remembered to take it out this morning.
Question then - i am going to have to start cooking it at about 4p.m - do you think it will be defrosted by then?
TIA x

Hmmm... not sure - I assume it's a whole chicken? I've had them not defrost overnight in my fridge so I'm always wary about the times they give.

Do you have a microwave?

i defrost mine in the microwave

Juliehafrancis · 23/09/2004 12:22

I think it should be fine - fingers crossed! How about checking it at 3.30 and if it not defrosted properly then try defrosting it a bit in the microwave. If all else fails and you are unsure I would suggest quickly nipping to the shop for another one!

Yes Soupdragon, it is a full chicken.
I do defrost chicken breasts etc in the microwave, but have never done a full chicken.
TBH i am in a bit of a panic, because i will have to go shopping and get another if this doesn't defrost.
What about if i leave it, and if it hasn't fully defrosted, finish it off in the microwave. Do you think that would be ok?
I don't want to give my guests food poisoning!

I'd say no it wouldn;t defrost!!

You could try putting it in very tepid water just to give it a boost -although would still be very wary and probably char it in the oven just in case - Oh actually I would just go buy a new one!!

lou33 · 23/09/2004 12:28

I do full chickens in a microwave, but what you have to remember is that defrosting in them by weight will still leave the centre iced, so you may have to increase the weight by a feww hundred grammes to make sure it is prioperly defrosted in time.

SoupDragon · 23/09/2004 12:36

Don't you find that bits get warm and slghtly cooked though?

Twinkie · 23/09/2004 12:44

Thats why I won't use a microwave to defrost things - bits always seem to still be frozen and other bits completely cooked!!

Well that and paranoia that I am going to give someone fatal poisoning!!

lou33 · 23/09/2004 12:46

Nope soupy.

Defrosted stuff from the microwave is supposed to be iced in the centre, as it is recommended that final stages of defrosting is done at room temp. I don't if I am in a hurry though.

saintshar · 23/09/2004 12:52

Oh bog it!!!!!!!!
I have just been to check it, and it is still as frozen as when it was when i took it out 4 Hrs ago!
I am off to the super-market for a fresh one - it isn't worth the risk!!
Thanks for the advice anyway.
