DH loves gammon and bought one at the farmers market today.

It's in the oven cooking now. Does smell lovely but it's just going to be a slab of meat, new potatoes and green beans.

What would you put with it to make it a bit more interesting. And to detract from the taste of gammon.

???

Parsley sauce is lovely with it.

I don't like gammon either it's like eating a lump of salt. I think people shove a pineapple ring on it or something.

oxocube · 12/08/2007 17:43

mmm don't eat much meat but I do like gammon, sliced thinly with salady stuff. Dh loves parsley sauce with his or you could always go down the Geordie route and have it in a stotty with pease pudding

Not have gammon?

Ketchu- lots of

Sorry.

Pineapple is to make it mroe digestible, apparently

I'd shred it with a cream sauce and pasta with parmesan.

Dropdeadfred · 12/08/2007 17:48

white sauce - yum yum yum..i love gammon

Charlie999 · 12/08/2007 18:04

I mix together breadcrumbs (that I freeze in bulk usually), strong grated cheddar cheese and pinapple pieces (drained from the juice) and very generously spread over the top of the gammon steak. Cook at 200 for about 20 mins till golden brown - SCRUMMY. We have it with jacket pot and peas.

Other thing I do is BBQ it and pineapple rings and eat with chips. mmmmmmm.....

Well I was so taken with the idea of cauli cheese that I dashed round to the corner shop and it's cooking in the oven as we speak.

DH has been asking for gammon for ages, and he's quite excited aout this one (!) so I guess I'll have to have it again next week and try out some more of the suggestions here.

Thanks all

that was salty! DH thought it was wonderful. Much improved by the addition of the cauli cheese, which can you believe, I've never cooked before.

DS liked it too, so we'll be having it again... with the Tiniest amount of gammon!

a honey glaze is also lovely on it

calordan · 12/08/2007 19:04

i make it bit like pizza, chopped tomatoes, bit of chilli, and then cheese and melt on top, cant stand the pineapple way

Ceolas · 12/08/2007 19:09

Gammon/ham always goes down well here too.

Dropdeadfred · 12/08/2007 19:54

You can soak the gammmon joint overnight to reduce some of the salt before roasting...

USAUKMum · 12/08/2007 19:55

if it is very salty you can soak off some of the salt before you cook it. I usually do a honey glaze (honey, brown sugar and a little powdered mustard) and serve with a chutney.

lizziemun · 12/08/2007 20:16

I always soak for at least 24 hours changing the water 3 or 4 times. (gammon is always salty if you don't).

I then boil with gloves, peppecorns and bayleaves a few of each until cooked. I take of the skin and most of the fat.

I then bake in the oven gas 5 for about 30mins, with orange juice, mustard and honey. I then thicken the sauce with corn flour to serve with cooked gammon, boiled pots and greens.

A quick question has anyone cooked gammon with coca cola, and whats it like.

calordan · 12/08/2007 20:19

ooh i have done ham in coke, nigellaesqe, it is the best, tenderises the ham, and then just smear with treacle and roast, serve with dauphinoise pots and corn fritters, with chilli jelly on the side

The gammon we bought had a lovely oak smoked coating. If we soaked it, that would go as well wouldn't it? To be fair, it was the redeeming feature.

When I did the gammon in coke (I really do try to please my man don't I ) I soaked it for ages and it was still very salty. Guess I just don't like it.
