I've got some leftover mash from tonight's dinner. Not enough to top a shepherds pie ( unless it was very small) and the only other thing I know is to mix in tinned fish to make fish cakes but they always turn out vile. Anyone got some delicious way of using up mash?

mashed potato pancakes are very nice

If it’s just a few spoonfuls I generally freeze it and then add it to the next soup I make. Frozen mash goes weird if you eat it as mash again but is absolutely fine in soup.

Some good ideas here from bbc recipes

Teddybear45 · 24/09/2019 18:57

Add herbs and extra seasoning, mix it with chopped ham, then coat it with an egg / panko mixture to make croquettes

Potato cakes! Just form a dough with flour and fry in quite a dry pan. Delicious

There are all great, thanks!

I made potato cakes last night. Just made the recipe up. Added fried peppers, fried onions, sweetcorn, wholegrain mustard, salt pepper, and grated cheese. I formed into patties and coated in flour egg breadcrumbs. I ran out of breadcrumbs and they were equally as nice. Made vegan with olive oil in and omitting cheese which I did for my best friend. We fried ours in our new magic frying pan, his were oven baked. Both turned out crispy delicious 😋

Do you have any left over veg? I always save some mash and veg from a roast dinner and use it the next morning for bubble and squeak, fry it all together with some nice ham or bacon and fried eggs

floppybit · 24/09/2019 22:45

@Myshitisreal I'm intrigued by the 'magic frying pan'?

Fish cakes with tinned fish are, i think, a bit not quite right. But poach a bit of fish in milk and then make fish cakes. V nice.

I tend to just make potato cakes and fry.....

SkiingIsHeaven · 24/09/2019 22:56

It is delicious in a sandwich with some gravy. I am not joking. Delicious.

Sorry. I am Northern.

TheAlternativeTentacle · 24/09/2019 22:59

Toast some bread, mash the mash on top, grate cheese over, a few drops of tabasco and pop under the grill. Heaven.

I like to make American potato salad (eggs, celery, pickles, etc) it is really good with mashed potato. A bit dirty, but very comforting.

floppybit · 25/09/2019 09:22

@SkiingIsHeaven I'm originally from down South but I've been living up north for 12 years and I've seen some shocking food, such as a pie barm, but never a mash butty!!! 😂 Don't think I can bring myself to try that one. Mind you, my sister is a southerner and she drinks jugs of gravy 🤮

Just mix in a load of grated cheese, then add another good sprinkling of cheese on top before putting in the oven with no cover. Lovely delicious cheese pie with a crispy top. Yum.

SweetPeaPods · 25/09/2019 09:27

I would just reheat in a pan with a little milk and butter and have mash again.

Falafel19 · 25/09/2019 14:27

Fish cakes with tinned fish sounds vile! Proper fish cakes with nicely cooked salmon, cod, smoked fish etc are the perfect use for leftover mash.

Myshitisreal · 29/09/2019 15:06

Every since we ate the potato cakes I can't stop thinking about them wanting more so think I'm going to make them again 😂 oo, what did you make with it in the end. Did anyone suggest potato bread I can't remember. It's a matter of adding enough plain flour to mash to make it workable with like a dough. Make a ball, roll out (coating rolling pin with flour) and cut onto 4. Dry fry and butter before serving. Some fry in butter but I think it's far nicer dry fried. Oh, the magic frying pan is this www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6149288.htm?cmpid=APP003 I just love it. Nothing sticks, it's a great size and gives great crisp. Then again I'm easily pleased 😁😂

floppybit · 29/09/2019 21:14

I ended up using @ittooshallpass idea of mixing in chees, sprinkling with cheeses and baking until crispy. It was good. I will definitely have a go at your potato cakes next time
