Cleaning jars to reuse

Jam and chutney time of year - has anyone got a genuine way to remove the sticky residue from the outside of jars ?
Some labels soak off in seconds - others seem welded on and leave a sticky gunky unmovable film that I can't seem to get off ?
I don't have a dishwasher...
Help ?

Brillo pads (wear rubber gloves).

Lighter fluid on a bit of kitchen towel. Gets rid of all sticky stuff very easily. Does smell though, and they will need a really good wash afterwards.

Very hot soapy water, then a bit of wd40 on cloth.

Nail varnish remover

Lakeland sell a bottle of stuff called Sticky Stuff Remover. It is probably just an expensive version of one of the previously mentioned chemicals but it does work.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 12/09/2019 17:06

WD40 removes adhesive residue. Even says it on the can.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 12/09/2019 17:34

Don't put them in the dishwasher [learned from experience].

Boiling water and scrubbing. If that doesn't work they get recycled!

I love jars with plastic shrink wrapped labels!

Soak as much off as possible.
Then smear a good dollop of olive oil over the sticky gunk, leave for a while, then clean off with neat washing up liquid and a damp metal pan scourer

BentNeckLady · 12/09/2019 17:38

I gave up trying to clean any jars that come from
Lidl as the labels never seem to come off whatever I try 😬

swissmilk · 12/09/2019 19:13

I have a bottle of sticky stuff remover that it probably 20 years old, so I use that. It seems basically a thin oil, so that might work? I would smear the label with oil and then set to work with the edge of a sharp knife (disclaimer: my hands and arms are covered in scars from doing things like this, so take more care than I do!)

newtlover · 12/09/2019 19:15

just put a bigger label over the sticky bit Grin

Fridakahlofan · 12/09/2019 19:37

Scrape off with a knife (try and serrated and none). I promise it is the answer you are looking for!

When you finally get the jar clean, buy a white pen which can write on glass to label it and then you won't have the same problem next time round. I got mine from an art supply shop.

RezCowgirl · 15/09/2019 14:02

Acetone

newtlover · 15/09/2019 14:18

but does the white pen stuff come off? or are you doomed to always use that jar for the same contents?
