sigh
dds love juice (the diluting kind)
mum has it at her house and since they hardly ever go there i dont mind her giving it to them
they dont pester me too much about having it in the house but i have been wondering if there IS an ok juice to give children
i have a thing about it rotting teeth, you see, plus i dont believe all the labelling "no added sugar" means "yes there is sugar in here but we havent added any more"

im not even sure about fruit juice diluted down

any info gratefully received

TIA

We hardly ever have juice. Mine drink water or milk. Occasionally smoothies or copella apple juice. I've bought the odd bottle of Rock's coridal (blackcurrant) which seemed nice

GroaningGameGirly · 07/08/2007 13:12

Do you mean what I'd call squash or cordial, rather than real fruit juice? TBH, I never gave my children the syrupy kind, just occasionally diluted apple juice when they were smaller. Now they'd bit emy arm off for a Coke! I guess anything other than water can rot your teeth but I'm all for a bit of everything in moderation and regular teeth brushing!

nailpolish · 07/08/2007 13:12

thats all we have bundle - water or milk

we have OJ for breakfast - i add water so its 1/3 water

ive seen that cordial but assumed it too contained sugar

oh yes i forgot that everyone else calls it squash/cordial etc

Not really sure what you mean by diluting juice tbh.

Mine just have apple or orange juice (with a bit of water added). It's best to have juice with meals afaik.

They occasionaly have lemonade though.

oliveoil · 07/08/2007 13:15

we only have watered down juice or water

cordial is usually full of crap tbh

although you can probably get a ponce one if you look hard enough but then you may as well get proper fruit juice

no added sugar usually means sweeteners

then again, I was brought up on Vimto so I don't think we should over analyse

flowerybeanbag · 07/08/2007 13:16

Rocks.
Lemon, Orange or Blackcurrant. It's basically water, organic sugar and organic fruit, and it's yum!

FunkyGlassSlipper · 07/08/2007 13:16

we have milk, water, and fresh fruit juice. I dont dilute it but we make sure teeth get cleaned well.

oliveoil · 07/08/2007 13:17

mine refuse fizzy drinks Halo

we get coke for Nigella Coke Ham (and mixers for mummy and daddy, ahem) and when they went to try it they made the same face they make for brocolli, ie food of the devil

doggiesayswoof · 07/08/2007 13:20

AFAIK Rock's cordial has sugar in it, but no aspartame or artificial sweeteners. (I've never bought it but a friend does.)

Fruit juice diluted with water is fine if they are only having it with breakfast - I think the sugar is only a problem if you drink loads.

Personally I'd never get the 'no added sugar' diluting juice/squash because of the nasty sweeteners.

Dd loves diluting juice too - she gets it at MIL's

nailpolish · 07/08/2007 13:22

ive even unsure about the Rocks one tbh

OP posts:
flowerybeanbag · 07/08/2007 13:22

yep Rocks does have organic sugar, but the alternative is sweeteners which are worse I would say.
Only other thing to do if any kind of sugar is a no-go is to dilute fruit juice as people have said, but then there's sugar in fruit juice as well, isn't there, naturally.

nailpolish · 07/08/2007 13:23

god i ts an effing minefield

flowerybeanbag · 07/08/2007 13:26

If in doubt stick to water and let them have it as a treat at your mums only.

isaidno · 07/08/2007 13:26

FFS! If you dilute it loads and loads there surely can't be that much sugar in a cup?

Go on, be a devil and get some squash for a treat!

nailpolish · 07/08/2007 13:26

according to the website
rocks organic contains fruit juices, water, sugar and citric acid

sounds, um, bad for the teeth

OP posts:
Clary · 07/08/2007 13:27

rock's is yummy but yes, it does have sugar in it (have you ever drunk neat lemon juice?)

That's fine tho IMO - I mean are we seriously going to ban all sugar from the DC's diets?

We only have it now and then, usually drinking up party leftovers (have to have squash on offer at a party IME, as well as water).

oliveoil · 07/08/2007 13:28

yes and so is Vimto and we went through CRATES of the crap growing up

I got my first filling (ooer) aged about 27

nailpolish · 07/08/2007 13:28

and according to wilkipedia citric acid erodes the teeth

OP posts:
isaidno · 07/08/2007 13:29

better not eat any oranges and lemons then...

nailpolish · 07/08/2007 13:30

clary, i dont ban all sugar, i just think sugary drinks are a hundred times more resposible for tooth decay than sugary foods. with drinks, its either sugar or chemicals. or milk/water.

OP posts:
Clary · 07/08/2007 13:43

sorry naily not having a go, I mean of course you don't ban sugar.

I'm not sure a glass of squash is anywhere near as bad as those hideous chuppa chups lollies for eg tho.

Or even an ice lolly which is swilling around their mouth for ages. and I let them have those....

Iklboo · 07/08/2007 13:47

My friend used to eat sugar butties. On thick white bread.
AND Carnation milk butties [bleurgh emoticon]

Piggy · 07/08/2007 13:47

My dses have water or ocean spray cranberry squash very very diluted - by the time I've diluted it it looks like water with a very slight pink tinge. I brush their teeth twice a day, they eat well so I'm really not bothered about a teeny weeny bit of squash.
