Bees wax food wraps

Are they actually any good?

I tend to like tin foil because it holds the shape of a wrap better or zip lock bags if im making sandwiches the day before. Would beeswax food wraps be a serviceable alternative.

(I tried silcone food bags but found them large for the amount of they actually contained and didnt clean up well, so they went for the chop. I quite like paper bags but they dont seal if i make ahead and if use them to portion stuff in the freezer they stick together. So i wasnt impressed with those either. Id like to improve my eco credentials but im not doing very well so far)

I bought some to use instead of cling film for lunchboxes. I’d say they’re just ok. Ds says they make his sandwiches taste funny. Dd hasn’t had this problem. They don’t wrap as tightly as foil or cling film and if they’re not put inside a lunchbox they can end up dry. They’re good for covering pots and bowls though.

I bought mine from Oxfam and they’re actually made locally which I liked. Maybe other brands are better. I’m not rushing to buy any more though!

My daughter made some of these last term. They are OK. One went mouldy on that very hot Thursday we had in July, the mould wouldn’t wash off so I chucked it away. It could be that my daughter’s productions arn’t brilliant quality but they are not as waterproof as plastic/ foil and are a bit bulky . I can’t wrap them tightly round the sandwich but they are OK.

Hmmm...a bit as i thought. I might give them a swerve. They arent cheap!!

I think the pack I bought in Oxfam was £13 and that was two wraps big enough for sandwiches and one smaller one.

Just had a look at what’s available on Amazon for sandwich wrapping and think I might get some brown paper bags that will recycle? There’s a pack of 200 for about £7. I was planning to use foil but have just read that’s worse than cling film Shock

I like the idea of them but, from videos I've seen of them, I don't think they'd wrap things well enough to stop the contents being tipped out into my bag. It's also one more bloody thing to wash, on top of the myriad of storage/tupperware boxes I already use.

I'll stick to boxes and foil (which gets recycled).

For sandwiches I use a lunchbox cube with separate compartments so I can put everything in there without wrapping it.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 20/08/2019 10:18

I dont get on with lunchbox cubes, they're too big and don't fit a packet of crisps in any of the sections! If you have to carry multiple lunches they're a real pain.

I have brown bags. They're not always easy to get a well saladed sandwich in, and dont hold the shape of a wrap. I do use them. Just not often.

Yeah the one more thing to wash is offputting

Ok but not great. A limited life span

OrangeJustice · 20/08/2019 13:40

I don’t get on with loose sandwiches in those boxes either.

There are tupperware-type boxes that are shaped to contain 2 bread slices. Think Poundland etc. Safe in the dishwasher, & last a very long time.

I had some great boxes from Wilko - yes, they are plastic but I've had them at least 3 years and use them all the time. The range of sizes mean I can always fit them to the size of my sandwiches!

Well i thought id give it a go anyway. I bought a pack from Amazon and so far im pretty happy. They do hold the shape of the wrap pretty well and hold together. But they are a bit sticky for sandwiches, remains to be seen if that naturally wears off.

Those boxes are bigger than the individual cool lunch bags i use ir smaller than a wrap. Neither would hold a wrap together.
