My mum says no but I really fancy scrambled eggs 😬

Get a jug of cold water.

Put eggs into it.

Any that float are gone off.

Any that stand on end but stay at the bottom are still ok to use, but use those first.

Any that lay on their sides on the bottom are still very fresh.

I would use them. If an egg is off it smells really bad..you would know the instant you cracked it

FinallyHere · 05/08/2019 10:40

I opened this thread to say exactly what @BiddyPop has already set out

from my 1970's brownie guide book

An egg that is really off will indeed smell obviously bad if you crack it open: it will spray out everywhere, too

fishonabicycle · 05/08/2019 10:45

I have never even looked at use by dates on eggs! They last ages. And I have never had an off egg either. Just eat them.

FinallyHere · 05/08/2019 10:48

I have only had two bad eggs, fifty years part

Clearing up after one is horrible, and takes ages. The test is so easy, I would always do it if there is any doubt.

Eggs last ages past their date, and are really obvious when off so there is very little risk of getting ill from an off egg.

Do the float test and enjoy your scrambled egg.

Then give your Mum a good talking to about wasting perfectly good food!

kateandme · 05/08/2019 12:43

perfectly fine.weve done it countless times when you get the one at the bottom of the egg spiral and realise it shouldve been eaten first not last!

ricecrispiecake · 05/08/2019 12:48

My eggs that I've just used were use by 24th July and we've just had some lovely scrambled eggs Smile

Use them definitely!

@BiddyPop you beat me to it!

I also heard once that after the salmonella hoo ha of the 1980s that eggs in this country are typically date stamped at least a fortnight earlier then they could viably “turn” in normal conditions.

I'd eat them without hesitation.

gingermary · 05/08/2019 12:55

Just do the float test as above, don’t crack it to check the smell- if they are off which seems unlikely it will stink the house out.

Vanillelle · 05/08/2019 13:23

I would, unless it smells bad when you crack it. Eggs can last absolutely weeks past their sell by date.

FrancesHolmes · 05/08/2019 13:34

I wouldn't.

BadBadger · 05/08/2019 13:36

I always do the float test as detailed above. Never had a bad one even ages after the date.
