Barbecue help needed please

We are having a barbecue on Sunday, 6 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby who eats, one who doesn't yet. I'm all sorted completely for the meat side of it but I always struggle for accompaniments. Does anyone have any good ideas? I'm not a big salad eater as I can't eat raw tomatoes. I'm thinking maybe a green salad with some sort of cheese maybe? Also, I need ideas for other 'bits' to go with the barbecue. I'm hopeless at coming up with simple, tasty, inexpensive ideas.

baby potatoes partly boiled, on scewers and roasted on the BBQ - lush!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 31/07/2007 19:34

peel and dice a whole wack of potatoes. wrap in foil with some butter and spices. put on BBQ til done.

also do same with carrots and mushrooms.

you can add onions to either if you wish

Cous cous is incredibly simple to make. I mix with roasted veg and some harissa and leave at room temp.

Messy though...

Thanks for the ideas, keep 'em coming....

Green salad with thin slices of parmesan or caesar dressing .
New Potatoes, served warm tossed in cremefraiche, Philly or butter with chopped chives

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2007 11:28

plate of roast veg, aubergene, peppers, oven roasted with balsamic vinegar, oil and soy sauce and a bit o thyme - oven roasted new pots with rosemary and garlic (in cloves) - lettuce, pancetta and avacodo salad with a bit o cheese (yum) - dressings I do couple of spoons of mayo rather than oil, mustard (wholegrain - put in first) balsamic vinegar and soy sauce. God I'm hungry, lots of dips and relish like hummous - i could go on

rebelmum1 · 01/08/2007 11:29

Like the creme fraiche pot idea - i'm going to try that tonight

We make pretty much the same thing every time we have a barbecue

potato salad or pitta bread
green salad

and sometimes one of the following

halloumi
field mushrooms (wrapped in foil with blobs of butter and a tiny bit of chopped garlic, cook towards the end)

aDad · 01/08/2007 11:38

halloumi good because it's done in no time

corn on the cob always nice

Mercy · 01/08/2007 11:45

aDad, should the corn be par-boiled first?

aDad · 01/08/2007 11:55

no need mercy, just brush with oil or butter and slap it on, turn it fairly often as it cooks fast.

while i have bbq experts about - i struggled with a vegetarian the other day, i normally like to make something myself but the poor dear just had a vegge burger - anyone got any ideas?

Budababe · 01/08/2007 12:19

A kebab/skewer with red onion, peppers and haloumi is nice for veggies or just bake haloumi in foil.

Prawns or fish nice if they eat fish.

RE OP - I usually do Delia's pesto risotto salad - can be done in advance and is yummy - it's in her summer cookbook or maybe on line.

Lentil salad - tin of lentils drained and washed, chopped red onion and cherry tomatoes and chopped feta. Toss in whatever dressing you like.

Similar with tinned chick peas, chopped tomato, red onion and cucumber. Dressing.

Budababe · 01/08/2007 12:23

Delia's "risotto" salad here.

Can be done in advance so easy and keeps well.

Also her roast tomatoes are yummy.

Budababe · 01/08/2007 12:24

Oh and I just use pesto from jar!

Mercy · 01/08/2007 12:38

dh used to be a vegetarian (now eats fish). He would have veggie sausages (Quorn or glamorgan ones) or the veggie kebab as Budababe suggested. Onion, mushroom, pepper, tomato etc - brush with a basic olive oil, garlic and lemon marinade and then cook.

Thanks aDad!

I second delia's pesto rice salad - it is wonderful. We roll it out every bbq (as do our friends who introduced it to us and its now a bit of a standing joke).

However, I have for years done it the long way with fresh basil etc and this year whilst on hols with aforementioned friends she made it with a jar of pesto and I was . Not because it wasn't fresh but because I'd never thought of it !! Much simpler.
