Urgent chicken question

auntyquated · 18/09/2004 17:32

we always seem to throw out a lot of raw chicken as i never want to risk it but am i being over cautious.

tonight's chicken breasts say sell by monday, best before tuesday but were delivered by tesco on wednesday

opened them and they smell, not just a little bit but dd said "I can smell eggs". It looked OK, so i thought i'd cook it and see. well i've fried it off and it looks OK, doesn't smell bad, tastes OK but not perfect. question is
do we eat it or not?

poultry often does smell a bit funny though. If it says bb Tuesday ( I assume you mean this Tuesday not last!) I'd chance it

discoinferno · 18/09/2004 17:37

I wouldn't it shouldn't smell.

I would not eat it. Chicken should certainly not smell! I have had the same problem with chicken from tesco a couple of times and have had to take it back to the shop for a refund. One of the customer service team once told me that you should freeze chicken straight away after buying it and then thaw it when you need it. Which is not the reason I buy fresh chicken!!!! The sell by dates i think are too long on the tesco chicken!!

auntyquated · 18/09/2004 17:41

i usually freeze it, but like you, think , why?
2-1 take-away here we come

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Go with your instincts. If it smells 'off' it probably is. Imagine if there were no 'use by' dates and you were just using your own judgement. Would you still be thinking of eating it? Or maybe you've already eaten it now??!

pixiefish · 18/09/2004 17:46

takeaway- I never risk meat

auntyquated · 18/09/2004 17:47

no, it's still festering on the hob as evidence when dh returns.
which take-away is the healthiest? we're supposed to be being sensible

80sMum · 18/09/2004 17:48

Oooh. Healthy take-away? Is there such a thing? I would say a chicken shish kebab with plenty of salad.

80sMum · 18/09/2004 17:49

Who am I to dictate? I'm going to a fish'n chip supper tonight!!

allthegirls · 18/09/2004 17:50

Chinese is probably the healthiest option if you choose sensibily! But to hell with it when life throws these little obstacles at you who wants to be sensible!!!

auntyquated · 18/09/2004 18:00

found jar of pasta bake and some fresh pasta and garlic bread in the freezer! not very calorie friendly tho'

SoupDragon · 18/09/2004 18:31

Def throw it away. I never risk chicken and have had this a couple of times with Tescos chicken.

I would chuck and 'take away' something nice to compensate. any excuse to not cook!!!!!

Demented · 18/09/2004 18:42

I've had this with Tesco (only Tesco I may add) too, make sure you get your money back off them. Go for a take away, Indian can be good if you go for chicken or prawns with no creamy sauce (perhaps Tikka or Bhuna) hold off on the Naan and have boiled rice instead of pilau.

auntyquated · 18/09/2004 19:10

OK , will email Tesco and link them to this thraed to, i'll let you know what response I get.

very glad we didn't eat it, just returned to the kitchen where it is still on the hob and it STINKS

thnaks for all the advice.
P.S. pasta bake was lush

Took chicken breasts back to Sains only last week as they smelt disgusting but were 3 days within eat before date. They didn't even check them and refunded money straight away. Remember the re-packaging of foodstuffs episode a while back? Always trust your nose!

Juliehafrancis · 18/09/2004 21:25

We have had lots of problems with Co-op, tesco's and sainsburys chicken and pork. On several occasions I have opened up the meat a couple of days before the best before date and it is off. I now will always make a point of complaining and speaking to the store manager. I think it is awful and so dangerous!

Juliehafrancis · 18/09/2004 21:26

I forgot to say the "reason" they gave is because sometimes there is a perferation in the packaging and they can not check each one indivdually.

libb · 18/09/2004 21:31

I have had to constantly complain to Tescos about dodgy online service so will you let me know how you get on? I have received standard worded e-mails for months now and "apparently" the store manager will be contacting me for my opinions - I have already shared those opinions via e-mail and yet still nothing has happened. I have decided to take it further because it is a joke for such a large chain - there, rant over! Grr!

Don't eat that chicken - post it back to them

Juliehafrancis · 18/09/2004 21:42

Don't email - It doesn't work! Telephone the customer service number or the store who delivers your order!

carla · 18/09/2004 21:53

I love the thought of an urgent chicken ... but no, I wouldnt've eaten it
