it'll be ok won't it

slight vinegary smell but looked normal colour

maybe a day over sell-by

going to be chilli con carne .. can simmer for an hour

I would use it.

But unless it's poultry, I generally laugh in the faces of sell-by dates.

Gosh I ate Beef a few xmasses ago that had sat in my fridge from 23rd Dec until 2 days after boxing day. It had been my big xmas day joint but I was in hospital nil by mouth so obv. I HAD to eat it when I got home.

I roasted it heavily.

Anyway, why do you spose Curry exists?

i would use it - would not risk chicken or fish but a day over on lamb should be okay.

I think 2-3 days past the sell by date on red meat will be fine. I'm sure I have heard that the sell by date is just a guide line and what about maturing the meat adds tenderness.

vinegary smell is ok

yeasty or bad-eggy sulphrous smell is the one to avoid.

Sounds fine to me Twig. Am an ex-catering manager and agree with Huw to an extent - never risk poultry or shellfish but red meat has much more lea-way. Let's face it some people like to eat pheasants or Bambis that smell to high heaven

ahh well you see use by was 11 July but I froze it on the day of purchase (it was discounted so must have been due up that day)

problem is took it out of freezer on saturday and only cooking it today

and how do you think curries and chillis were invented .. meat spoils quickly in hot climes so the strong spices hid the taste

I also think its fine to use based on that but FWIW curry powder does not prevent food poisoning!

Yes but dodgy meat is cooked in spices to disguise taste of slightly dodgy meat so that people can still eat it without vom-ing.

disguising smell is one thing where there is no (for example) e-coli. It will not prevent food poisoning if there is.

If it's E.coli you're worried about then cooking it properly will kill it all even if the meat still tastes a bit elderly.

(knew I'd left my microbiologist hat off for a reason )

how difficult is it to catch a cow??? Aren;t they quite slow?
