I jsut felt I should share what happened with my niece a while ago as a gentle warning about peanuts.
My sis & her hubby had friends over for dinner, (they live in the US) & they had a bowl of cashew nuts out, her DD who was 3 at the time was still up & was sitting on one of the friends knee eating the odd cashew nut. (She's a big 3 the size of a 5 year old.) so my sis thought no problem. Anyway next thing she starts coughing so after a few pats on the back sis took her to the kitchen for a drink of water. She sat her on the working top & got her a drink as she turned back round she noticed her lips had gone blue, she immediately called for an ambulance but by this time my niece had turned white then grey & fell of the working top onto the floor & was unconscious. My sis & her husband began the normal of thumping her on the back, squeezing her turning her upside down & anything they could think of to dislodge the nut. My sis was screaming she's dying, her husband completely lost it & they really thought that was it. Good luck/sense took over my sis & she started mouth to mouth rescucitation & somehow managed to get a breath of air into her, she coughed & started crying. At this point 911 turned up & took over. She had to spend 2 days in intensive care & is fine now. They said my sis saved her life by doing mouth to mouth. They never found the peanut & she had intensive tests to see if it had gone into her lungs, somehow it must of gone into her tummy & been digested. My sis had only ever seen mouth to mouth done on the TV & had no first aid expereince at all
I wanted to tell you about this as I think we can all be a bit complacent at times & can forget how easily this could happen. I expect some of you may think well she shouldn't of been given a cashew nut at such a young age & I agree with that but she did & this is what can happen.
