My 2 year old loves pickled herrings - should I worry?

This is my first post so be gentle with me!
At the risk of sunding utterly ridiculous I have recently started to worry that my 2.5 year old little girl's love for pickled herrings (roll mops) is not particularly good for her. She will easily eat two large pickled herrings cut into pieces without the onion at one sitting. Should I feed them to her at all? And one last thing - should I be so worried about the fact that my little one fails to spit out her toothpaste after brushing, much preferring to swallow it! These are the things I am worrying about at the moment which shows the extent of my problems!!

I'm not a lover of roll mops myself but my only concern would be the salt levels. Are they fairly salty or is that a misconception on my part?!

My 2yo always swallows the toothpaste too. As long as you are using the recommended amount, I wouldn't worry!

Oily Fish is very good for her, I should think, I'm sure I'd encourage it if were my child (up to 3-4 times a week).

Toothpaste -- this is why they are supposed to use a kiddy brand with kiddy levels of fluoride, until they learn to spit it out (around age 5-6).

Give them, it's GOT to be better than macdonoburgers.

if it is in vinegar you should keep it to a minimum the amount you give each week as too much vinegar isnt good in moderastion it is great for them as for the toothpaste i think all children tend to swallow it as does my ds 2.3 also drinks bath water and eats the bubbles lol try to maybe rinse most of the vinegar off and just introduce different fish at the same time so she can get a taste for other fish and just give in moderation dont worry i think all kids have something they shouldnt really have

Hell yes

You have spawned an infant with no taste buds

It's quite common for small children to like sour flavours isn't it? I remember snacking off many pickled onions as a small child.

you just have to accept that they will eat the toothpaste, sigh. my children have been through phases of eating it and coming back for more

My LO (now 5!) has always adored pickles, roll mops, lemons, vinegar on everything. I wouldn't worry about it!

Thanks for all your responses - really helpful! I will probably rinse a little of the vinegar off for her so it's not too harsh on her tummy. I had forgotten what a fiend I was for pickled onions though until you mentioned it!

Is she potty trained? It must make her nappies stink if not.
(I remember my dd's when she had her first pickled onion [nostalgic sigh])

moondog · 30/07/2007 21:10

Damn good things.
Don't fret.
My dd would eat an entire jar of picallil in a sitting if I let her.
