I have never made any cakes apart from the usual victoria sponges but thought it would be good to make DS his 1st birthday cake.
Ive found a cake I like the look of www.cinderellacakes.com/images/Bday1st/slides/Bday1st-33.htm and im going to make the decoration a bit easier ie ive found some play doh car/bus cut outs to do the vehicals so im not freehand drawing.
But heres what I dont know what to do
1)How can I get make a number 1 like on the top of this cake
2) how do I paint the cars etc do I use food colouring?
3)do I need any supports to put one sponge on top of the other?
4)ive bought a cake board but how do I decorate that? do I just use icing?

As you can see I need lots of help
Thanks

I would make the number one out of card. I think it would be too hard to make it out of anything edible.
You can get icing pens and food colourings in all the supermarkets.
Just put one cake on top of the other.
I would use an icing pen or piping bag to go around the cake board.

When our son was 1 we made 3 Thomas the Tank cakes. The first was a practice which we were up until midnight doing. we then made another for his family party and a third one later in the week for his friend's to come. I think there was one bite eaten out of all of them!! I think the blue of Thomas Tank put everyone off!!!!

bloody hell kbaby .. that's a little advanced

OK personally

I'd probably make the 1 out of cardboard .. and stick skewers to it

although thinking of it I'd probably ditch the huge number and just get one of those number 1 candles (I think its rather overbearing for the cake)

painting the cars ... I'd probably use writing icing .. you get it from cake section and its in little tubes

does it have to be multi-layered? (I'd tend to do a big cake) .. but if multi-layered I wouldn't use struts

you can spread cake board with jam then put dessicated cocunut in a plastic bag with some green food colouring and shake .. shake onto jam et voila .. grass

oh and I'd use a madeira recipe rather than vic sponge

He is 1.
He will be utterly wowed by a Victoria sponge smeared in glace icing with a '1' on the top made of smarties, and/or a candle.

Save your energy till he is 8 and demanding a cake featuring the Power Rangers fighting the Pirates of the Caribbean.

Would one cake be enough?
Buy ready to roll white icing (or ready rolled, even better) to cover the cake and the board.
Colour the trimmings with food colour and use for the cut out shapes.
A pack of writing icing usually has black, red, yellow, green, so get some for the tracks and details.
A fancy candle No.1 or have a look for name or train ones in your local party shop.
