My copy arrived today. Anyone else got it? I'm tempted by quite a few of the recipes.

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/05/2019 22:10

I'm Interested, what sort of recipes are there?

Blondie1984 · 01/06/2019 02:13

Got this one on my list for next month (i.e. tomorrow) and this month's purchase was the new Nigel Slater
Also intrigued by the look of the new Phil Vickery one

Sticky toffee pudding and dog in the hole plus those carrot cake overnight oats will feature on this week’s meal plan.

I love how she’s made the book affordable by keeping it plain but the food sounds great.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 01/06/2019 10:09

I want to try one of the stews with bread.
We often have left over hard bread due to my habit of buying loaves for 6p before the supermarket shuts.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 01/06/2019 10:10

Oh and chilli roasted chick peas.
And the Pina colada loaf

Cherrypi · 01/06/2019 12:18

It is breakfasts, mains and puddings.

I made the bread, bean and herb stew today.
I used fresh carrots and a parsnip as I had them kicking around.
And also fresh spinach and chopped cavolo Nero.

I put brown sourdough cubes in.

I also made the roasted chickpeas and we had them with salad to start.
I chucked some kale in there too and it was excellent.

IWantToBeNynaeve · 03/06/2019 20:10

Question please for anyone who has the book, is it specifically geared towards UK products ? I'm in Ireland and we don't have Morrisons, Sainsburys, Asda etc so if a recipe specified a particular item from there then I'd be stuck!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 04/06/2019 00:29

No it isn't.
It has a few recipes with slightly niche things (tinned asparagus for eg) but it's generally very simple.
If you can get tinned beans, chickpeas, tomatoes, potatoes, spinach that would cover most of the meals.

Manclife1 · 04/06/2019 00:43

Am a bit disappointed with it if I’m honest. There’s a huge list of different canned items at the start of the book then she basically sticks to beans and tomatoes through the book.

GrumpyCatLives · 04/06/2019 01:10

Tbf, I believe she wrote it with food-bank users/ those on very low incomes in mind? That may explain why she keeps it simple.

Manclife1 · 04/06/2019 01:13

Your absolutely right and it’s a brilliant book in that respect and I’ll definitely be using the recipes.

Cherrypi · 20/06/2019 12:21

Made the carrot cake overnight oats last night. They were lovely probably could have done with the sugar though.

I've just bought the book. Also tempted by the carrot cake overnight oats and pina colada bread. Lots of things, actually!

I'm in the fortunate position that I'm not on a tight food budget, can afford fresh food and have a fridge freezer. So bolognese made with corned beef won't be happening here unless Brexit is even worse than I expect. I do like tinned food, though, so I will be trying quite a few of the recipes. I love anchovies but don't use them that often, and she has a few ideas for those, for example.

I was struck by her idea of buying chicken, stewed beef, baked beans and spaghetti hoops and then rinsing the sauce off them before adding to something else. I don't think I could bring myself to do that because of the waste, but I'm sure she's right that it's more expensive to buy tinned haricots in water rather than a tin of baked beans. But I would probably use the recipes that use stewed beef etc as inspiration for similar dishes that start with the raw meat, uncooked pasta etc.

Serin · 29/06/2019 10:14

Really disappointed with this book, I get that its aimed at food bank users but it seems wasteful to use several tins to make soup, when you can just open a tin of soup Confused bought it for son who is at uni but I will donate it to our food bank.

Sooooozie · 30/06/2019 18:01

Serin Surely the quantity you make is larger than one tin of soup, though?

Socksontheradiator · 01/07/2019 19:22

I love this book! Favourites so far are carrot cake porridge (husband not impressed but only because he thinks porridge should be hot) and pease pudding 'chicken' soup.
Tried the lentil and mandarin curry today. It's edible, at best.
It's a very helpful way of keeping a stocked larder and always having something to hand.
@Serin, I think you are right about food bank. And if you have 3 tins of tomatoes and no tinned soup (broke, searching the back of the larder, pulling together with broke mates etc, I can see how the recipes might be helpful Smile
