Snack ideas for 1-year-old

DD2 is hungry, hungry baby and needs snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. DD1 has never had much of an appetite so when she was little I didn't carry around loads of food with me. What 'nutritious' snacks do you feed your little ones at this age? I give her soft fruit and raisins(but too much has a real laxative effect) and I also give her crackers/cheese. Has anyone got any other good ideas that are easy to prepare and easy to cart about in my bag when we're out and about.

A winner here is puffed wheat or puffed rice. You can buy them both in Sainsburies with no sugar etc. Just decant a handful into a little tupperware. DS loves them.

mini bread sticks were always a big hit with mine. Also dry Cheerios, but not sure if they're acceptable these days! Carrot/cucumber sticks if he can manage them?

RubySlippers · 20/07/2007 20:48

rice cakes
carrot sticks
baby corn

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/07/2007 20:51

Babycorn.
Corn on the cob (dd has been eating since she got 4 teeth (2 top 2 bottom) - you can cook them the night before.
Organix cereal bars.
Bananas (my dd won't eat, but virtually every other child seems to).
Bread sticks.
Grapes.
Oatcakes.

inamuckingfuddle · 20/07/2007 20:55

rice cakes
bread sticks
cheese
dry shreddies (really, DTs love them!)
fruit bars

Ceebee74 · 20/07/2007 20:55

Organix mini rice cakes (apple flavour ones)
Melba toast with jam on (can prepare it beforehand)
Babybels
Fruit toast (although not very portable but DS loves it)
Breadsticks

Cheese straws (flakey cheesy breadstick type snack) DS loved them.
Bread sticks
Organix crisps
Malt loaf

ds is a very hungry baby and flapjacks work well as they are v filling.
(I have a healthy recipe with honey and banana in it with not too much sugar - posted it on a thread in food titled something to do with flapjacks!)

Thanks for the ideas. DD2 is singularly unimpressed with rice cakes and breadsticks - she's not overly keen on crackers to be honest. She really likes vegetables but I'm resisting carrying boxes of cooked carrots and broccoli around with me as its so messy! She hasn't really got the teeth to cope with raw carrot sticks (similarly apple which she loves but I'm so paranoid about choking).

Cheese straws, maltloaf, dry cereals all good. I'll have to look for the flapjack recipe. What is fruit toats?

oatcakes seem to fill up my 14 mo, plain or "sandwich" with a smear of Dairylea or Philly in the middle.

coleyboy · 20/07/2007 21:20

Humzingers - always a winner in my house.

ballbaby · 20/07/2007 21:20

I always liked bananas - they're ready packed and filling - if you use ever-so-slightly green ones they wont be laxative.

ballbaby · 20/07/2007 21:23

If you're going to have dry cereal why not use bran flakes - they are slightly but not too sweet.

WeasleyWonka · 20/07/2007 21:25

A staple for dd1 at that age was pancakes spread with a vegetable and/or bean puree, rolled up like a swiss roll. Would wrap in foil & could be taken anywhere. Could also add spinach puree to the batter to make the pancakes green.

ballbaby · 20/07/2007 21:51

You mean you actually make your own pancakes for snacks?! I'm impressed - I made purees etc for ds1 but when ds2 came he was lucky if he got fed at all!

Muffiosa · 20/07/2007 22:04

recipes please, weasleywonka. they sound lovely.

Ceebee74 · 21/07/2007 07:23

Hairytoe - fruit toast is like the fruit teacakes that you toast - but in sliced loaf form (so really bread with raisins in) - Warburtons do a lovely one with orange bits in it as well as raisins. Toast it and put loads of marg on - yum!! The slices are nice and small so just the right size for lo's.

katelyle · 21/07/2007 07:40

Cold pasta.
Olives

BTW - if needing snacks only mid morning and mid afternoon constitutes "hungry hungry" then I must have given birth to gannets! But I think I knew that!

HairyToe · 22/07/2007 10:04

katelyle -cold pasta good idea i'll try that.

She seems to gbe absolutely starving evry two hours or so to be honest. to make it clear i was talking about snacks and not main meals.

Its a bit of a shock for me as DD1 has always been a tiny eater. She didn't say I'm hungry till she was 2 and a half!
