Posh Picnic.

Have my folks coming to visit at the weekend, which I’m very excited for as not seen them in a while.

While they are down my daughters are taking part in an horse shoe and would love to make a really nice picnic to take with us...

Being away at horsey events most weekends we are well versed in sausage rolls and rounds of sandwiches but would like something that’s goes with a nice bottle of wine a little more special for us all to enjoy.

Doesn’t anyone have any favourite picnic foods or suggestions?

Strawberries, olives, marinated chicken, flatbreads, oils... that kind of thing?

Speech day picnics were things like -

Olives and nuts with fizz.

Coronation chicken
Salmon
Salads
Homemade quiche of some sort
Nice bread

Summer pudding or just strawberries, raspberries and peaches
Decent cheese

Naice cheese, butter and bread.

A lot depends on what those attending like to eat, eg I’m a foodie and would love any of the posters’ suggestions, but my ILs are all fussy gits and like “traditional” stodgy English stuff.

Strawberries tend to go mushy IME.

Lots of great ideas here. I also do roast veg, couscous and salad leaves in a big Tupperware box ( from Delias summer cooking with my own little twist). You can add feta or chicken if you want to - its delicious hot or cold.

We will be quite busy on the day and car and trailer will be jam packed so as well as wanting if to be nice want it to be quite simple (to make) and not take up too much space, obvs I will find room for a cool box for the wine!!

A cool box for the food would be better. You don't want to remember the weekend for all the wrong reasons.

Charcuterie board, olives, parfait, smoked salmon mousse, oatcakes, onion chutney.

Scotch eggs, pasties and wee individual pies always seem to go down well at picnics and you can tailor the fillings to suit your tastes. My family's favourite is a hot water crust pork pie. You could always add a cake as well, something like a nice fruity tea loaf or a tray bake of some kind.

Spanish tortilla, olives, stuffed little peppers, stuffed vine leaves, charcuterie platter, maybe Pimms? Cheeses, little cheese straws, Eton mess if you can keep it cool enough.

Smoked salmon sandwiches, chicken drumsticks, hard boiled quail eggs (buy them ready shelled) and prepared celery sticks, radishes, cherry tomatoes, would all travel well, especially in a cool box.
Instead of soft fruit, I'd pack a rich fruit cake or lemon drizzle cake, as they will travel well.
