Do you just whizz up a tin of beans and some oil?

I think it's made with pinto beans - like kidney beans. I've got a tin in the cupboard I'll have a look.

Pinto beans
Onion
Red pepper
water
salt
cumin
jalapeno chillies
chipotle chilli extract.

Don't know the quantities though

no, to do them from scratch takes hours of simmering.

whizzing up a tin of beans with oil will make a beany puree/dip type thing which would be edible but is not refried beans.

I have always wondered why 'refried' does that mean you fry em a bit, then come and MN for a while then go back and fry em a bit more?

lljkk · 18/07/2007 14:43

They are only fried once. Refrito really just means cooked twice.

Take Well cooked pinto beans.
Get a potato masher out.
Mash at low heat in frying pan, preferably in lard (but whatever you like to fry in is fine).
Add other suggested ingredients to taste.
Can add water to help get a smooth texture.

When we have done it we used dry beans, which involved soaking overnight, then cooking for 3 hours with onion, garlic, chillis. Which basically makes frijoles. (A real PITA)

Then you do the frying more or less as ljikk suggested, adding more onion.

I dont know with tinned beans. Would you still need to boil them at all first? I guess not.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 18/07/2007 15:33

Thanks all, hadn't realised the frying would have to be after the mashing.
Will try whizzing up my tinned beans briefly with chopped onions then frying it all with other bits and bobs. I'm not after authenticity, just a beany mess to confuse my bean-hating DH .

Bobsmum summed it up! I do 'to taste' and have to live out the jalapenos and chipotles for the DDs and DH - who has Scottish stomachs.

Glad to see I'm not the only one too tight to pay 1.30odd for a tin of Old El Paso. It's meant to be peasant food LOL.
I added some tomato puree too and spread in the tortilla with chicken, cheese and a bit of broccoli it worked a treat.

soften some red onion, add two cloves of crushed garlic, tin of kidney beans, small tin of sweet corn and a tin of diced tomatoes and a table spoon of tobasco sauce and after a couple of mins add a bunch of chopped coriander. cheap and easy!
