My DS is 13 and always hungry! What semi healthy snacks do you have in for your teens?
Thanks

Oh my Ds is constantly hungry, he drinks a pint of milk every day after school, eats a full dinner & then is hungry for snacks. He is a tall lanky string bean, always on the go so I'm pretty lenient on the snacks. Most popular
Boiled eggs, crumpets with cheese or marmite, cheese & crackers , pepperoni, mixed nuts with dried fruits, flapjacks &,granola bars, cereal with milk, instant noodles, microwave popcorn, fruit apple slices with peanut butter. He's a gannet!

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 09/05/2019 20:58

I always get extra wholemeal bread in when my step kids are coming, they have sandwiches and things on toast.

Peanut butter, cheddar cheese, soft cheese, tinned mackerel (in spicy tomato sauce, yum), tuna, egg mayo, pate, ham. Possibly not all together.

I hide the jam and marmalade cos if it's not protein heavy then they're hungry again in five minutes.

Justlikedevon · 09/05/2019 22:13

I had to stop buying junk as dd mainlines it at the moment. Bread products go at an alarming rate.
She now tends to go for (through necessity more than choice!) Hummous and something - bread sticks if I'm kind, cucumber if not, porridge, cherry tomatoes (recent addition) cheese strings, Greek yoghurt with blueberries.

Wholemeal toast with banana and peanut butter
Yoghurt with fruit and a bit of granola
Banana pancakes
Philadelphia on toast
Beans on toast
Babybel with an apple or banana
Homemade banana bread/malt loaf (or Soreen if I can't be bothered to bake)

managedmis · 10/05/2019 02:03

Peanut butter sandwiches
Cheese sandwiches and a pint of milk, add a Mars bar for the road
Flapjacks
Banana bread, topped with mashed banana
Any kind of cake made with veg I. E. Carrot, courgette etc
Porridge
Don't forget he'll need protein, not just crap carbs I. E. If he has cereal, try get him on a full fat yogurt as well

You could also do huge portions of pasta salad, made with ham, mayo, cucumber, diced cheese

And a batch of lentil and veg soup as a starter with a wedge of bread will take the edge of his appetite at supper time

DIY pot noodle www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/8035/smoky-bacon-pot-noodle-for-one

Ooh thanks all, great ideas here 😀
Must remember the protein tip as he mainly goes for cereal and bread. Like the veg cake ideas, frittata, big pasta salad in fridge etc. Going to batch cook this weekend! He has additional needs so not keen on him cooking himself yet when I’m not in...

DS is a food hoover - doesn’t help that he does loads of sport.

I always have:

-hummus
-fruit loaf
-whole meal pitta
-yoghurt pots
-popcorn
-peanut butter
-dried mango
-home made pop tarts (filling is whizzed up freeze dried fruit mixed with apple purée and I make my own pastry)
-peanut butter filled pretzel nuggets
-nuts. He wolfs down bags of peanuts in one setting.
-grilled chicken pieces
-oat cakes
-cream cheese
-snack sized cheese
-chocolate milk
-grapes
-tins of pineapple

He is 15 and trains for 2 hours a day in an intense aerobic sport. He should be huge with the amount of food he inhales, but he has so little excess on him!

Mominatrix · 10/05/2019 20:03

I forgot about porridge - I have a Costco box of individual packets he just microwaves up.

justasking111 · 10/05/2019 20:09

Mine is the same eats so much lots of muscle from sport but skinny. He has his own shelf in the fridge which I keep topped up. He loves those sushi lunch type things, pasta salads, microwave burgers, home made sausage rolls, some of the pot noodles, smoked sausage. He does go on and off stuff. His favourite at the mo. is smoked sausage, salad cream and crushed crisps in a sandwich.

CherryPavlova · 10/05/2019 20:14

My son used to empty the fridge asa teenager. He grew so quickly at 13.
Scrambled eggs were a favourite.
Any leftovers from main meals - lasagne, cottage pie etc.
I always had a tub of coronation chicken made up to pop in pita bread.
Rich fruit cake with slabs of cheese. Banana loaf.
Anything really. We avoided having crisps, biscuits etc but had to refill the fruit bowl every other day.

These are really useful ideas, my eldest ds 12 is always hungry after 7 ish and I try and steer him to healthy snacks but he puts on weight really easily unfortunately, so I do try and push him to high protein low fat snacks but he often eats an apple or carrot and then is starving.

What kids of food are higher protein (more filling) but lower in fat ?

frogsarejumpy · 12/05/2019 08:38

Thanks all for great ideas 😀. Having a big cook today making lots of these!
High protein low fat I guess is anything with eggs, lean meat, cheese/cottage cheese, nuts (“good” fat). Frittatas, omelettes, bean and pasta salad, low sugar (naturally sweetened with fruit) muffins may be good too? My ds is skinny and losing weight with poor appetite due to ADHD meds so needs little and often but quality ideally. My dd is healthy weight but very big appetite for sweet things so trying to find balance so she doesn’t eat too much while he eats enough!

you can find lots at planet organic, I love them and they are quite healthy actually, I put my favs: www.planetorganic.com/abakus-jujube-red-date-crisps-20-g/28651/ and www.planetorganic.com/trek-original-oat-flapj-56g-56g/17038/ and www.planetorganic.com/eatreal-quinoa-chilli-lime-30g-30g/19064/

Unsalted nuts and dried fruit mixes - I mix in other things like dates, apricots, a few salted nuts...those are grabbed by the handful from the box that's always ready.

Malt loaf, homemade flapjack (with lots of seeds, chopped nuts and dried fruit in the mix), cheese scones and muffins.

Hardboiled eggs, ready cooked and peeled in the fridge.

Yogurts (full fat, plain, that they stir honey or jam into) with granola topping and fruit.

Plus there's always some sort of crisps (from a multipack so individual bags, otherwise a family bag would be hoovered in one sitting) and a variety of crackers like oatcakes and breadsticks.

trickyex · 18/05/2019 12:30

Great thread, I have a massively tall and sporty teen who hoovers up food.
I use many of the above and for a sweet treat which is a bit healthier I make Jamie Oliver brownies but with ground almonds instead of flour (as well as dark choc, organic butter, less sugar than the recipe) and organic eggs.
These are a big hit and very filling.
Cottage cheese or kefir pancakes are also good, filling and protein rich.

Mominatrix can you talk me through your homemade pop tarts? Inspired idea!

Mominatrix · 18/05/2019 19:05

I have the Brave Tart recipe book, but the recipe is also located on the Serious Eats website.

The recipe on the website differs from the book only in terms of the filling. The linked one has corn syrup to moisten the pulverised freeze dried fruit and the book calls for apple puree instead. I also don't make the glaze as I think it is unnecessary.

Large bags of freeze dried fruit are available on Amazon and I sneak them into loads of things. They give a natural, intense flavour and colour and I find it better than fresh fruit for baked goods.

The recipe is a bit fiddly the first time around, but I made templates for the filling and the pastry so the second time around was much easier.

They freeze really well, so I make a batch and put the majority in the freezer and take one out and put in DS's snack pack in the morning of races. It is defrosted by the time he needs to eat it.

Mominatrix · 18/05/2019 19:08

I forgot one other tweak - I use 4oz of freeze dried strawberry, 2 oz dried pear, and 2 oz dried apple.

4oz = 113g
2oz = 57g

trickyex · 18/05/2019 19:20

Thank you! Hadnt heard of the book. Great idea for a snack.
