Healthy homemade snacks before bed to aid sleep?!

My 3 and 6 years old are always hungry! Any ideas for something tasty but healthy before bed? They won't eat banana or porridge.

Appreciate this may not work for everyone but my two are quite gullible. I tell them that they can help themselves to anything from the salad/veg drawer. Anything else would be bad once you’ve brushed your teeth. The six year old usually has a drink of water and goes to bed. The four year old will help himself to some veg sticks, cherry tomatoes or mushrooms to take up to bed.

A small bowl of any wholegrain, low sugar cereal (eg weetabix)
Toast or crackers with peanut butter v
A mug of warm milk

Weetabix, oatcakes, or make a flapjack style traybake that's relatively low fat. Mashed banana can be substituted for some of the sugar and fat in flapjack.

Non-sugary cereal or toast with a mug of hot milk

Children actually shouldn't eat anything for an hour before sleep because it's bad for their teeth. However I do recognise this isn't always practical

If your going to do anything Id focus on making it as low sugar as possible, including avoiding fruit. So cheese and oat cakes, peanut butter on toast. I love marmite rice cakes but some children might not.

I would basically go for toast based things, cream cheese on toast /oat cakes? Or some wholemeal pitta and hummus? (Can have half a pitta each or a small pitta?)

The low sugar thing is partly for teeth as @BlueCornishPixie said. Also because it could create a sugar rush which disturbs their sleep

SweetPeaPods · 05/05/2019 08:28

Oats are meant to help sleep, flapjack?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 05/05/2019 08:33

Why are they hungry at night? I think kids should eat a proper dinner and be fine until breakfast. I think constant snacking isn’t good.

What are they eating for dinner and lunch?

EvaHarknessRose · 05/05/2019 08:46

I believe turkey and lettuce are meant to have sleep enhancing properties (Tryptophan?)

But I would maybe go with hot milk.
