twinklelittlestar · 16/07/2007 23:50

I can anyone tell me if it's ok for my 6 month old to eat petit as i have noticed it has added sugar in the form of glucose syrup.
thanks.

Plaiun yoghurt is the best.

suzycreamcheese · 17/07/2007 00:00

i agree with moonday, plain yogurt or greek
easy to mix with banana or some pureed / lumpy fruit too, depending on stage they are at

NoBiggy · 17/07/2007 00:03

Have you tried them?

They are lovely, thick and sweet.

Far too good for babies quite frankly.

Let them know that yogurt is a bit sour with lumps in from the start.

Otherwise you're just spoiling them

crokky · 17/07/2007 00:17

I gave my LO petit filous at 7 months. I don't a small bit of sugar is a problem.

crokky · 17/07/2007 00:18

I don't think a small bit of sugar is a problem!!

Sixofone · 17/07/2007 09:26

I was advised by my HV to give dd Petits Filous, as they've got lots of calories in a very small quantity (thanks to the sugar )

They do have a lot more sugar in them than other kinds of yogs, but as a 6 month old has spent, well, 6 months drinking really sweet milk anyway you're not going to condemn them to a life of dental work just because of a few fromages frais.

(I 'allegedly' was brought up on a dish of Birds Custard a day. I'm 32, hate anything sweet and don't have a single filling )

callmeovercautious · 17/07/2007 09:55

My DD was violently sick after one of these - more than once because I did not realise the connection 1st time Dr said it was too rich as she had always had a plain home cooked diet until then (including bf).
Try a little first and see how lo takes to it. Personally we now have yoghurt with fruit mixed in every few days (i say we because one pot is too big for her on her own so I eat some

Can recommend Yeo Valley Strawberry Jumble and Fruit Jumble - much less sugar than petit filous but just as yummy. Less yummy when reproduced all over back of car an hour or so later but heigh ho.

Enid · 17/07/2007 09:58

they ARE v sugary

but they are also all french and yummy with nice packaging

MrsBadger · 17/07/2007 10:00

There's the equivalent of a teaspoon and a half of sugar in each pot - if you're happy with that then give it, if you'd prefer to avoid it (and/or save money) use natural yoghurt with or without fruit.

Sweet little girl on the side though

'helps bones grow strongerer!' wtf????

hate that advert!

agree with pistachio and moondog.

plain yogurt and fresh fruit - yum!

Enid · 17/07/2007 10:07

ooh the apricot ones though

barbamama · 17/07/2007 10:08

They've also got glucose-fructose syrup in them, one of the few things in the UK aimed at young children which still has - this is a real no-no for me. I wouldn't stop my toddler having the odd one now and again but I certainly wouldn't give them to a young baby or listen to the ludicrous HV advise about 2 a day that I got!

See www.netmums.com/h/n/FOOD/HOME/ALL/321//#glucose

As others have said, there are now plenty of healthier alternatives on the market.

FillydoraTonks · 17/07/2007 10:13

unwise, i think,

rachels is good. they DO have a bit of added sugar (am not esp worried about this if i am honest-fruit contains sodding sugar, just don't go overboard). Also it tastes better.

I think the big thing in weaning is to give them decent food that you want them eating a lot of as they grow up.

And pricewise, those petit filous aren't cheap, esp for what they are.

amidaiwish · 17/07/2007 10:20

i gave mine petit filous from a young age (needed to get their weight up) and it did work..
however now they reject all other "healthier" yoghurts. so i would resist and go for a less sweeter/less sugary one from the start.
in fact that's the one thing i tell all my friends when they start on solids- lay off the petits filous, once on, they'll never go back!

Enid · 17/07/2007 10:22

mine eat petit filous or natural with fruit

think its a myth they wont go back tbh

you can break any habit if you are committed to doing so

amidaiwish · 17/07/2007 10:22

interesting link barbamama...
rice krispies??! mine love them - i thought they were a good choice

amidaiwish · 17/07/2007 10:23

well mine refuse all other yoghurt
so now they don't get any.

MrsBadger · 17/07/2007 10:28

iirc Tesco Value rice cripsies don't have added sugar (or not as much, or something - go read the packets)

JodieG1 · 17/07/2007 10:36

Too much rubbish in them imo, I give the organic yeo valley ones to dd and ds1 and ds2 will have them when he can, doing BLW.

twinklelittlestar · 17/07/2007 19:20

Thanks for all of your comments. I think on balance I might leave introducing the petit filous until she is a little older. I'll see how it goes. Definately consider using plain yoghurt and fruit and perhaps the Rachels or Yeo Valley. I have tried these and they are delicious! thanks again.
