Vegetable Shortening??? ...

Is this the same as Cookeen or Trex vegetable fat? It's to grease a cake tin (per Wilton Thomas tin instructions) and I can't imagine that it's going to taste very nice. Ugh! Anyone know whether they're the same thing? BTW instructions say not to use butter, veg oil or marg but can use a spray just can't get it out in the sticks!

Hi Millie. Vegetable shortening is used a lot in the USA. It's basically solid vegetable fat and is soft and white and comes in a slab, so I should think that Cookeen is probably the same stuff. Your recipe is probably American. As it's only being used to grease a tin you probably won't be able to taste it in the finished product. hth

I am intrigued
If it's not to go in the cake but just to grease the cake tine why not butter or marge? Is it going in at a very high temperature

Tell me tell me I MUST KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BAKING

BTW white flora is vegetable shortening too

Thanks All! 80SMum ... I thnk you're right - that's what it looks like. Beetroot - Stork's out cos it's Marg. Suzywong, have no idea why I can't use butter or marg but it's for a Thomas Cake and that's what the instructions from Wilton who make the tin say. BTW, I think I must be mad to have promised my almost 3 year old a Thomas cake for his birthday ... decorated to look just like Thomas!!!
