It's dd Birthday on Sunday & she
is having a Dora party, in the garden hopefully. I have seen some cake toppers on Ebay but the cake looks mega complicated! Anyone got any brainwaves? I'm not brilliant in the cake making department so can't do anything too complicated. Any ideas gratefully received

how about a backpack? that wouldn't be as complicated. you'd just need a lot of purple icing!

sparklygothkat · 15/07/2007 21:37

DD2 was into dora lots last year and we couldn't get a Dora cake anyway. We tried to get one of those cakes with a picture put on and tesco said they couldn;t do it as its copyright. What we ended up doing was getting a large chocolate cake, and then backed the picture with card, and put it on top and iced around the picture. JUst remove the picture when you come to cut it. lol

Here is a Dora cake

alfielooloo · 16/07/2007 14:41

That's fab LizP! Doesn't look too technical, anyone know what vanilla pudding is?

Don't know - think I would just make a simple sponge with enough eggs etc to end up with the right tin size. And just use the decorating ideas from that web site.

alfielooloo · 16/07/2007 22:59

Thanks, can't wait to get started on it now

what about buying one of those photo cakes from asda/tesco.
last year i made a cake using one of these and in the middle i put a barbie doll and lots of triangle pieces of icing so it looked like she had "burst" out of the cake.
or you could buy a plain white iced cake and stick dora candles and on ebay they sell things for cake decoration.

katz · 17/07/2007 09:28

i have one on my profile that i made for dd2

coddy · 17/07/2007 09:29

process boots themoneky

katz · 17/07/2007 09:31

should probably describe what i did, it was very easy but looked very impresive! i iced 2 cakes with green icing, then added some icing flowers then bubng our duplo dora on top and thats my cake!

FoghornLeghorn · 17/07/2007 09:31

Jeez Katz, that's amazing !

Well Done you - I wasn't blessed in the baking department at all

katz · 17/07/2007 09:36

thanks foghorn - but honestly is was very easy to do, the yellow bit connecting the to cakes is duplo, the figures are duplo, bunging ready to roll icing over a victoria sandwich is very straight foward!, you can even cheat and buy ready made cakes, no one will know!!

heifer · 17/07/2007 09:38

I bought a edible cake topper, but looking at website, all sold out,

but did manage to find

this

or this

or

lastly

Hope you have a great bday - My dd has a doral party for her 3rd birthday.

coddy · 17/07/2007 09:39

whas i this word" topper"?

MrsBadger · 17/07/2007 09:45

'thing that goes on top'

like 'primer' is a thing that primes and 'finisher' is a thing that finishes.

alfielooloo · 17/07/2007 19:38

Thank you everyone, can't decide which idea to use now!

Have decided to be adventurous & attempt to copy one of the cakes heifer found. Have received my Dora & friends to put on the cake today, only ordered them yesterday afternoon, brilliant service, will post their details later. The picture of the cake isn't that clear, any experienced cake makers out there got any ideas? Do you think it looks like ready to roll icing that has been painted with that powder that you can buy, or would you just use butter icing? I am going to make the cake tomorrow, then hopefully ice it on Saturdy.
Also, can you freeze butter icing?? Am making my fairy cakes tomorrow then I thought I could make the icing & ice them on Saturday, or would you just put it into the fridge overnight? Just trying to be organised but getting mega stressed about it all

katz · 19/07/2007 22:38

when i made mine (on my profile) i just coloured ready to roll icing green and yello to make the hills and the path running across them and used a little bit of food colouring on a cotton bud to hihglight and stuck on sugar flowers.

like i sadi before the bridge is duplo but you could custom somethng from cardboard or ice lolly sticks

there are loads of ideas here you need to scroll passed the ads

alfielooloo · 19/07/2007 22:49

This is just brill katz! How come I never found these when I was searching?
Thank you!
