I'm making cookies but don't know how!

DS birthday is next week. I've never done this before but decided to make some cookies for each child to take away in the little treat bags.

He's having a dinosaur themed party (feels like every 3 yr old I know is having dinosaurs recently Blush) and I thought it would be nice to make some dinosaur shaped cookies. I bought the cutter shapes on Amazon and they also come with these stamps to make bone indents in them which can be filled with icing or chocolate I think.
Now it all seemed great on paper and I now realise this has been rather ambitious of me since all I have ever accomplished on the baking front is some overly gooey brownies and some oddly shaped choc chip cookies years ago...

But I have already declared I will do them so I am looking for the best cookie recipe which is tasty and will hold the cut out shape without spreading and ending up in a blob.

Help? Please...

if I want something to hold a shape I normally do shortbread - if it’s for the kids I sometimes add choc chips (white, milk, maybe a combo). Really straightforward to make.

There’s a good kids cookie recipe on the bbc good food site. Works well!

Btw the biscuit cutters sound amazing!

Or a gingerbread, just make sure you have a biscuit rather than cake recipe

(Also you will get hours of fun out of them with playdoh after the party Grin)

Whatever you make, once you've made the dough roll it flat then put it in the fridge for a while before baking. It will firm up the butter again so much more likely to hold its shape in the oven

100g caster sugar
200g butter or margarine
300g plain flour
1tsp vanilla essence

Chuck it in a bowl and knead until dough forms, roll out and use cookie cutters

Can add optional nuts, chocolate, raisins, ginger, spices, whatever you like.

Bake on 160 fan for around 12 minutes

Thank you for the recipe and advice.
Here's to not burning the cookies along with the kitchen!

Should I do a test run?

Definitely do a test run!

Just thought I'd update that the cookies came out well!
I ended up going for plain sugar cookies, my skills turned out to be -10 when I tried to fill the bone grooves with anything so to make it look like actual bones so gave up on that and just dipped the bottoms of the cookies in chocolate to not have them so plain.
