Chocolate Victoria Sponge - can you add melted chocolate?

I want to make a chocolate cake but don't want a dense fudgy type cake so I would like it to be more like a victoria sponge type consistency but very chocolatey - would the addition of adding melted chocolate to the sponge mix change it very much? I imagine it will make it a little denser but wondered if it will affect the rise etc.

I’m not sure that would work. You can add more cocoa but if it takes the place of the flour you will need baking powder. Mary Berry’s choc cupcakes (I know you are making a whole cake!) have some hot water in and they are deliciously moist. Maybe you could adapt that recipe?

Surely just add cocoa powder?

Cocoa powder and milk. Chocolate will make it too dense.

I don't do a lot of baking but surely you just put cocoa powder in to make a chocolate sponge? I can't see liquid chocolate working with the baking process at all if you want a sponge texture, if you want it really chocolatey the filling/topping would be the way to get that wouldn't it?

Mainly I comment to see the tips from people who actually know though as I am a novice Smile

Cocoa powder is lighter though I've added chocolate and reduced butter and added baking powder

Yes, you can
Just melt dark chocolate, and add after creaming the sugar and butter.
If you use milk chocolate, cut the sugar and fat down a little.
