Packed lunches for an 11yo girl?

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/04/2019 13:52

I've mentioned that she's a girl as I've read that pubescent girls have different dietary needs from boys. She's got Easter school to prepare for SATs and we have to provide a sensible packed lunch.

I'd really appreciate some ideas. TIA. 😊

Today my Dd had a pastrami and cream cheese bagel, some cherry tomatoes, a little pot of dried fruit (raisins and dried apricots are high in iron), a yogurt and a digestive biscuit.

We’re having tuna pasta bake tonight and there will be some left over so tomorrow she’ll just take that and an apple.

I would give her something that’s easy to eat, doesn’t smell but nutritious enough to keep her going all afternoon- so carbs, fats, protein and making sure to get a serving of calcium in there. For example

A wrap, roll, stuffed pitta or sandwich (ideally Wholemeal) with a filling like chicken, cheese, nut butter, hummus, falafel and some salad etc then a yoghurt or mini Babybel and some fruit

What sorts of things does she normally have?

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/04/2019 19:47

She normally has compulsory school dinners Blondie, and she's not big on fruit or raw veg.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, they've been very helpful, and will be useful for September when she goes to secondary school, if she opts for packed lunches.

Chicken wrap
Small block of cheese (extra protein)
Popcorn (treat, better than crisps)
Veg/fruit eg cucumber or carrot sticks, apple, grapes, raspberries - 2 portions
Yoghurt tube or drink
Biscuit or mini muffin

School is nut free

DD eats some of that at break, and some days she'll leave some until after school. But she's going through puberty and some says seems to eat non stop, so i tend to put in enough so she won't go hungry. She'll leave stuff if she's full.

She's got Easter school to prepare for SATs

Ugh. Don't get me bloody started.

But that aside, if she's used to a school meal, what about a food Thermos with, for example, pasta or soup in it?

FunkyChunk · 03/04/2019 20:30

My DD has:

Sandwich on brown bread
Yogurt
Cheese portion (babybel or similar)
Grapes
Some kind of treat - biscuit / fruit cake bar
Bottle of water

catchingzzzeds · 03/04/2019 20:36

Cold pizza, chicken, sausages, yoghurt, any fruit she’ll eat, crackers, cheese, cheese straws, croissant, bagel, breadsticks, dips, nuggets

Vintagewannabe · 04/04/2019 16:12

I’d probs go chicken wraps too (protein and don’t smell)
yogurt with fruit
Flapjack style bar
Something like crisps as a treat

BarkandCheese · 04/04/2019 16:19

My DD has to take a packed lunch to a weekend rehearsals, she goes to the shop and chooses her own bits for it then makes it up herself. She normally has a ham salad roll, cut up veggies, a packet of crisps, some fruit (she has a thing about pomegranate seeds at the moment) and something sweet, often marshmallows. She’s not meant to have dairy because she’s singing so no cheese or chocolate.

PhilomenaButterfly · 04/04/2019 17:41

Some great suggestions, thanks.

BarkandCheese she'll make it, but she's not confident enough to go to Sainsbury's and get it herself. She'll make a list for me.

My dds is pretty boring to be honest.

This week she's had chicken on white teacakes, chopped cucumber, and little treat bun and a packet of crisps.

Her choice as she makes it herself.

What about just asking what she'd like

PhilomenaButterfly · 04/04/2019 17:58

What she'd like would be unhealthy shit. Hmm

OP posts:
PhilomenaButterfly · 04/04/2019 18:01

What she'd like is a BLT sandwich, houmous and carrot sticks, a banana and apple juice.

Knickersononeshead · 04/04/2019 18:03

That doesn't sound that bad to be fair 😂

My dd would just eat shit if I gave her full reign but she knows one main, healthy snack, a treat and bag of crisps

LordWheresMyShoes · 04/04/2019 18:06

That doesn't sound unhealthy!

justforareply · 04/04/2019 18:14

My DD has leftover dinner from previous night (roast, Bolognese, chilli, curry etc) in a good flask. Also likes a scotch egg
Cheese and crackers
She's asked for (and got) cold chicken nuggets with a tub of ketchup - lots of her friend take this
Vegetarian samosa
Apart from hot meals, has these with whatever is in fridge - cucumber, carrots, peppers etc. Occasionally hummus in a pot
With crisps, cake, mini bag of biscuits

justforareply · 04/04/2019 18:15

Ok and cold sausages sometimes
Food flask not 'good flask'

stayathomer · 04/04/2019 18:25

What she'd like is a BLT sandwich, houmous and carrot sticks, a banana and apple juice
OP I think what she'd like sounds fine, why would you think it's unhealthy sh#t? ( Honestly just wondering!!)

PhilomenaButterfly · 04/04/2019 18:48

I expected her to ask for unhealthy shit, she surprised me! 😂
