This morning, dh opened a brand new box of Rice Krispies (coincidentally purchased from Tesco) and discovered the inner bag was slit open. It was, I admit, quite odd the way it was slit, ie not along the seam of the packet but at right angles to it. BUT there was no damage to the box and nothing to account for why the inner packet was slit.

Anyway, dh was unhappy about it and wouldn't eat any of the contents. As no-one else eats them in this house, I am obliged to throw away a full packet of Rice Krispies. I think dh was worrying that they had in some way been tampered with I tried a couple and they were crisp and I have not died of Polonium poisoning yet... but the point is, what would you have done in that situation?

Take them back to TEsco - they will replace them

SlightlyMadSpider · 09/07/2007 22:36

They did with Baby milk (although that is posibly slightly different).

DumbledoresGirl · 09/07/2007 22:37

But how could I prove that the packet was slit before we got to it iyswim, or would they not bother arguing the case? Also, I dont think I have the receipt anymore...and I have chucked half the contents out on the lawn to poison the pigeons hereabouts.

I'd have thrown them as well. If I buy anything from a supermarket which I find is not sealed properly when I get home I chuck it. I don't think it's worth the risk.

Occassionally I have taken things back to be replaced but generally don't bother as I think the cost of petrol and my time just adds on to the loss.

1 week I threw away an unsealed 4 pints of milk. A loaf of bread, a bag of salad, pack of rice crakers and a pack of ham. I was fuming and now really check everything before it goes in a trolley.

I nearly took back a packet of cheese that looked like it had rat's teeth marks in it(it was sealed in the plastic though). Luckily DP reminded me that DS had been trying to eat it at the check out .

BadHair · 09/07/2007 22:40

They wouldn't argue - they'd just replace the packet. It really isn't worth their while to argue about it but without a receipt they might not refund, just replace.

SlightlyMadSpider · 09/07/2007 22:43

It is of such little value to them they wouldn't worry about it. They will ony ask for a credit from Kelloggs anyway (if they bother).

My tin of baby milk had been dented (it could have been dented after sale). The seal was split. They didn't even examine it.

Sixofone · 10/07/2007 09:54

They won't argue. Their motto is 'if you're not 100% happy....' well you're not, doesn't matter why! They make enough bloody money as it is

WaynettaSlob · 10/07/2007 10:02

Take them back. I have taken back a ub of Creme Fraiche to somewhere because the foil seal was broken and I only discovered when I went to open it. Was given another no questions asked.

Sixofone · 10/07/2007 10:10

Yes, it's much cheaper for them to replace something than it is for you to sue them because it turns out to have broken glass or a dead mouse in it!

Furball · 10/07/2007 10:10

I wouldn't eat them either and take them back next time you go.

Also a lot cheaper than loosing your custom.

In any case all manufacturers put a "if you are not completely satisfied with this product return it to Kellogs" so you could have sent it back to them too and they would have sent you vouchers for a replacement (and probably more actually). ITs a lot easier to stick the pack in your car and pop it back to Tesco than post it to Kellogs though

DumbledoresGirl · 10/07/2007 19:18

I shouldn't have chucked half the contents out on the lawn for the birds to eat, should I?

Take it back and claim it was split and half empty?
