Went looking on Mumsnet for info on how much salt is safe for babies. I look religiously at tins and my dd has just started on more 'normal' food now so am worried about salt in things like baked beans. Lo and behold it's probably here somewhere but I couldn't for the life of me find it. Found it here though and thought others may be interested saltyinfo

Heavens, seems high! I thought that was the RDA for children under 10...

And have you seen how much sodium there is in savoury baby food jars? I was worrying about whether it was OK to use tinned veggies and if OXO cubes were a big no no, but when I worked it out I still had less sodium in mine using them, than in the jarred stuff.

1g does seem an awful lot though.

have just worked out though- if we follow the info on the link 1g sodium =2.55g salt so it's worse than we first thought. if baked beans have 0.7g sodium in 100g then that means that it's actually about 2GRAMS OF SALT. So we can give 50g of beans to a baby and that contains all the salt that baby is allowed- 1/8 of a tin of beans. Is that right or am I being totally thick?

i thought it was 1g of salt
and i thought you roughly doubled sodium content to get salt content

think the rda for adults is 2g........

salt RDA for kids 1-3 is 2g - just looked it up yesterday. not much help when food labelling only mentions sodium! would be grateful for a link to an authoritative source which says how much sodium = how much salt.

muminlondon · 13/09/2004 10:22

Food Standards Agency here says that that adults' RDA is 6g of salt or 2.5 g sodium which suggests a baby's RDA is 0.4g sodium. From 1 years old it's 0.8g sodium (another link here

There's a salt calculator you can find easily from the second link too.

makes it a bit easier when would you give processed foods like baked beans- which i thought were healthy but have .7g sodium per 100g so too much for baby

I buy low salt versions of beans for dd (18 months) but usually limit what she eats to a couple of teaspoons. I didn't really bother before she turned 1. I suppose you could make your own sauce? Make lots and freeze it, sieve and rinse the baked beans... no, just buy low salt ones.

thank you, muminlondon, now i just have to get dh to read it! have to admit, i hate the fact they put so much salt in things like processed beans and pasta which would otherwise be perfectly healthy (in the case of beans, positively nutritious) foods.
