next daft question - corn on the cob

Stargazing · 06/07/2007 16:49

how do I cut it to get a small piece for dd? have used every knife in our not-insubstantial collection and have achieved nothing but sore hands and corn juice weeping all over the beg board

Does it work better if you cut when cooked?

Cook then cut into cross sections so they're like little discs.

I get DP's meat cleaver, wham it as hard as I can into the cob, lift cob-and-cleaver combo over my head and slam the whole lot down on the chopping board with all the strength in my upper body. However, I am not sure where Elf and Safety would stand on this approach.

No chance

Takes great strenth to cut while raw

Are you going to boil it or grill it?

nomdeplume · 06/07/2007 16:54

I usually break the cobs with my hands

I just use a large serrated bread knife - work it right round the corn in a circle as deep as can be managed without losing fingers, and then sort of snap it apart.
I find if I cook it first then the underside of it gets too mashed up during the cutting process.
OTOH - our tescos sells pre-chopped versions.....but I'm too tight to pay for them!

blimey NDP - remind me not to shake hands with you anytime soon.......

ah ha, the bread knife - forgot that one, it was hiding in the dishrack. Job done and hands only a little bit red raw and bleeding.
Cheers chaps.
