I am making a chicken casserole in the slow cooker. It is going to need thickening but I don’t have any cornflower.

Have you added the water?

I've improvised by using normal flour not cornflour when I've not had any cornflour. It made no difference to the casserole I was making. I use normal flour all the time for that particular recipe now.

As long as the gravy is the right consistency for your taste.

Yes of course you can!

Greycat11 · 01/02/2019 14:27

Yes, I've done it without any problems

Yep, and if you use Self Raising by mistake, it still makes no difference at all

You can dredge the meat in flour before you seal it in a frying pan, before you get to the stage of adding liquid.

If it already has the liquid you can make a beurre manié which roughly means 'butter in the hand'. You get a spoonful of flour and a spoonful of butter and kind of mash them around in your hand until you get a texture like soft modelling clay. Stir it in vigorously. You shouldn't get lumps because there is fat mixed in with the butter.

Thanks all. The plain flour seems to working. Now only time will tell if my toddler will eat itZ I’m guessing not.
