I have just begun weaning my ds who is just over 4months,i started him on babyrice and we have now progressed to carrot, apple, pear and he is doing quite well.I just wondered why the packets and jars of food in the shops have meat in the meals i thought that ds could'nt have meat until 6months old.It says from 4months.I am really getting confused about what he can and can't have, and i am new to this weaning!
Please can someone explain.......

Don't give him those varieties. I remember thinking the same thing when I was first buying purees. You could probably get away with a mixed chicken/veg jar from six or seven months. It is very misleading isn't it?

Thankyou skerriesmum it is sooooo confusing one book says one thing and another says different. Then the health visitor says no meat but then the jars and packets say okay.
I will stay clear of those with meat in for a bit longer.

The reason the jars say that is the same reason as some still contain wheat/gluten. Basically the baby food manufacturers will do whatever they can get away with to make money. It actually took a change in the law to stop them putting salt in babyfood.

There are groups campaiging for the jar labels to be changed to 6 months in the light of the DOH reccomendtions. Whilst it may seem a bit draconium it would mean that those choosing to wean early would be more likely to have discussed the issue with their HV and be giving appropriate foods.
