Gluten free rolls

Is there such a thing as an edible one? Just starting DS on a gluten free diet and need to make packed lunches for him. Tried some rolls from morrisons this week but he said they were difficult to eat, he’s also a bit fussy so won’t have butter on a sandwich so I guess it was just too dry. Are there any available that are a bit more like normal bread?

My dd has been coeliac for 9 years and bread is the only real issue , she finds that she can eat sandwiches ( occasionally ) made with Schar white sliced bread . M&S bread is also not too bad . We’ve yet to find a roll that’s edible without being toasted . Have you tried the wraps or sandwich thins .

LittleCandle · 19/01/2019 08:57

DD said the Warburtons sandwich wraps were okay compared to most bread, but she also agrees that the bread needs to be toasted.

Daytimetellysucks · 19/01/2019 09:07

I’ve got a coeliac daughter

She likes the Schar stuff - they do loads of bread stuff which DD really likes

She also likes the sandwich thins (Warburtons I think)

She’s also tried Genius part baked baguettes and liked them

We also bought some frozen Genius sausage rolls - you have to cook them, but she’s taken them in cold for her lunch

She likes the wraps too

There’s a range called Promise that I have only found in Sainsbury’s, they do a sub type roll which is the best we’ve found. They also do a brioche loaf which is really good.

For packed lunches my first preference is wraps (the sweet potato Be Free ones preferably). Then sandwich thins are ok if there is a 'wet filling' e.g. plenty of pickle if I'm having cheese. I don't eat any other gluten free bread untoasted.

notapizzaeater · 19/01/2019 09:29

We actually like the new tesco and Asda ones.

Would a cold rice or pasta salad do ?

CMOTDibbler · 19/01/2019 09:44

If he won't have butter or mayo, then they will be inedible imo (20 years I've been gf). For a packed lunch, I think the Warburtons wraps are best as they don't fall apart.
I'd try things like soup in a flask, or pasta/stew/casserole/risotto in a flask or some sort of salad like pasta, rice, or potato. Or try a bit more of a picky box with cheese cubes, bits of meat (cold gf sausages perhaps), gf pretzels or crackers (the little Schar ones are nice) and the fruit/veg stuff as normal so he can eat what he fancies. It is a really hard process to go through, and I well remember crying over a vile packed lunch - and I was 26 and had made it myself!

Todayisanewday75 · 19/01/2019 11:02

Yes I was thinking the bento box approach might be the way to go. He loves rice cakes and corn thins so those with cold meats and cheese should be ok. He finds the genius toastie ok for breakfast, but then it’s toasted, topped with butter and marmite and served with scrambled eggs.

While I’m asking what do you find the best kind of gf pasta? I’ve bought brown rice fusilli but haven’t tried it.

For some reason butter is ok on toast but not in sandwiches

M&S is better than most but actually we prefer gluten free oatcakes as they are filling but tasty.

Tanaqui · 19/01/2019 11:10

The gf hot cross buns are edible without being toasted imo. I find the best pasta is the soy bean one, it’s usually with the normal pasta in Sainsbury’s rather than with the gluten free stuff. Otherwise gf oatcakes are good, corn cakes are lovely but not at all filling!

Notquiterichenough · 19/01/2019 11:10

I find the schar range by far the best. They do a bagette, which you can put in the over for a few minutes to crisp up, and I would happily have that without butter.

Mind you, for lunch I tend to take a flask of soup, with either beans or potatoes in it.

CMOTDibbler · 19/01/2019 11:32

Theres an italian brand that Ocado sell which is fantastic pasta

Twotabbycats · 19/01/2019 12:20

The best GF pasta is Barilla! It's made with mostly corn flour, which gives a better texture than rice flour.

I also like chick pea pasta from a local shop, but different brands are variable in terms of whether it falls apart when cooking.

I only eat toasted gluten free bread. Even the 'good' ones are better toasted.

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/01/2019 21:45

I’m coeliac.
M and s do a lovely white bread roll but it is pretty expensive for everyday. The schar bread tends to be good. Warburtons do a nice tiger loaf.

anotherdaygoesby · 21/01/2019 22:56

Also coeliac and agree M&S are the only bread rolls I'll eat. The artisan loaves are ok too.

Bread is not a main feature in my diet, you learn to like other things.

grumiosmum · 22/01/2019 17:48

DS is coeliac. The best GF bread we have found is from the Wheatfree bakery in Scotland. The rolls are the closest to real bread rolls we've tried. Other stuff is also good.

I order online in bulk for the freezer as the delivery charge is quite high.

He wasn’t keen on the M&S rolls either. He always used to have pittas for lunch so, despite the reviews on sainsburys, I tried the genius ones and they’re a hit! Not at all dry and actually easier to open up once toasted than the normal ones. I will be stocking up.

If you live in the Midlands there's a wonderful gluten free cafe in Newark which bakes its own bread

And Marmite isn't gluten free! But Tesco's yeast extract is gf, and tastes similar

Todayisanewday75 · 24/01/2019 09:29

I didn’t even think to check marmite!
