Do all eggs taste the same?

I have an eating disorder, I'm aware this is possibly a silly question to most of you who do not have one.

Does a scrambled egg taste the same as a hard boiled egg but with different textures? Same for omelettes, poached etc? If not then what's the difference in taste?

I'm trying to expand my diet but I feel too stupid to ask this question to people I know in real life. Knowing what the differences are will help me with trying to integrate a new food into my life.

No. They taste different. I’m not too keen on scrambled, any other form is better to me. Free range eggs are much better that ones sold at the shops.

No, the different cooking methods make them taste different as does whether the white and yolk are combined.
Burford Brown eggs are my favourites (in Sainsbury’s, Tesco) and scrambled duck egg is divine

Eggs taste different depending on how you cook them, which is amazing when you think about it. I agree with the above poster that free range eggs taste the best. It's hard to describe the differences in taste, but I can tell you that scrambled egg is very different to hard boiled in both taste & texture. I'm very particular about how eggs are cooked & won't eat them unless they are done how I like them.

I see your scrambled duck egg and raise you baked duck egg. Tastes very indulgent for what is a pretty basic foodstuff.

OP as a pp said the difference in taste comes from whether the yolk and white are combined or not. So with a boiled egg, the yolk is separate from the white. So the majority of what you eat (the white) is quite bland tasting. Then the separate yolk has more of a taste to it. This is different to if you scramble it because it's mixed together so the rich taste of the yolk is sort of diluted, especially if you do as I do and add a little milk to make it go further.

Scrambled eggs are richer because the yolk is spread throughout all of it (the yolk is the rich bit), and because it's generally cooked with oil or butter.

With a boiled egg, the separate white tastes much fresher, with the richness concentrated in the yolk.

The texture is also different. If you're struggling I would start with quite hard boiled as if the white isn't quite cooked it can be a bit sticky. Once it's boiled, the white will be really smooth, the yolk will be either the texture of thick face cream (silly comparison, but I think it works), or if it's totally hard boiled, it will be solid and slightly crumbly.

Free range eggs you get in shops and what you get from an actual farm/smallholding are also miles different. I used to have chickens... miss the eggs terribly.

My mum swears by 'beat up egg in a cup'. Nicer than it sounds - a soft boiled egg chopped up with salt, pepper and some mixed herbs. She has it with toasted soldiers.

Omelettes are probably the most similar to scrambled eggs, though depending on how you do your scramble, it could be fluffier? I like mine a little crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside 😊 and I definitely recommend free range eggs over cheaper eggs - burford browns or the waitrose ones are lovely! Or Clarence court if I'm feeling fancy!

Omelettes are close to scrambled eggs, and also what you cook them with, olive oil or butter for example, will give them a different taste.
You might like a baked egg custard, again similar to scrambled egg, but smoother and creamier.

I had a colleague who mentioned to me she always wanted to try new stuff but she was worried about not liking it, or spending money and binning stuff.
I told her what my dad told me which was you can always spit it out Grin and offered her things I brought to work. It really makes you think hard trying to describe blueberries/Brazil nuts/cottage cheese to someone!

I really like scrambled egg and omelettes and to me they're similar in texture

you could try omelette and adding things to it op.like tomatos or veggies.or bacon.
scrambled eggs can feel really comforting cant they.how are you finding them?
do you like that taste(as much as you can with your ed)
poached on toast is nice.
do you like to have fuller meals for your cals.or have one single looking item.if not could you tyr one egg poached and one boiled on one meal and have like a medley.could be quite a fun plate if youd be ok with that.
poached egg can be nice on beans on toast.
or smoked salmon bagel and eggs.
im really sorry I cant explain the tast which is really unhelpful as I know youd like to no the taste before putting the effort in to tyring them
but don't feel bad about trying and seeing.its really good of you to post on here to.very brave.keep going.
do you have anyone who could cook for you.that way the decision part could be for someone else?or would that be worse?

As Iklboo says above, getting a boiled egg and mashing it with a fork might be the way to go? It mixed the yolk and egg and makes it more like a scrambled egg if you see what I mean.

Do you like your scrambled eggs soft and runny or very well cooked? If the former, it might be worth soft boiling your eggs too.

I don't really like the texture or taste of eggs, but quite like quiche (because the egginess is diluted by all the other ingredients) and love French toast with maple syrup. I don't mind omelette either - I think the key for me is the egg being in a supporting role or part or an ensemble cast, rather than the star of the show.

I came on to mention duck eggs, they taste richer and I think have more fat so good if you want more calories.

Eggs are like potatoes in that they can be boiled, mashed,roasted, wedges and chips - all taste differently.

I agree that an omelette is the most similar to scrambled in taste.

Cheese omelette can be the food of the gods.

Have you tried adding things to your scramble? A spoonful of cream, some fresh herbs or smoked salmon?

Maybe start by adding a bot of grated cheese to scrambled egg and then trying a cheese omelette.

Souffle omelettes have a different taste but might be worth the effort. You separate the yolks from the whites, whisk the whites to a soft peak, fold in beaten yoles and fry as you would an omelette.

I think cheese omelette and hard boiled eggs are the best bet, my problem is softer textures. I don't really eat vegetables other than baby potatoes and lettuce (occasionally broccoli that's baked to crispiness in the oven) and things like pasta are still a huge no because I cannot stand the soft texture of it. I will eat rice and quinoa though.

Random but you might like kale in the oven. You have to watch it like a hawk or it goes from crispy to black but I do that and then put peri peri salt on and it's v crunchy

Hey sweetie, I honestly feel your pain, I didn’t have an eating disorder.. but I have really bad anxiety about trying new foods... I’ve not had a banana in years because some one told me a story about one and it put me off. It’s so difficult to try new foods. So in that sense I feel your pain. Until last week I hadn’t had an egg for years. (I have eaten cake with egg in) but not eaten eggs etc... so in the last week I have tried Omelette and scrambled eggs.
I have had all of these in the past it’s only if I don’t hve them for long periods of times. I have ibs so get bad tummy aches with certain foods, it put me off eating most foods but now It’s gotten to the point where I just dive in and eat the good I won’t. I don’t think until afterwards which by then it’s too late cuz I’ve eaten it. My next one is bananas.

So anyway scrambled eggs is my fav... if cooked in a small pan with butter. Pinch of salt and pepper. Tastes yummy and I put it on toast with ketchup. That’s just em Smile

I made an omelette wit hop frying pan and dash of oil, pepper and salt. Tastes very similar but I prefer the scrambled has more flavour in my opinion.

Boiled eggs I’ve not had for years but I remember the whites are boring and plain and the yolk is the best bit. I liked mine runny centred with a little bit thick bits so I could scrape on to my toast. Yum. I may have to go for it and make a boiled egg. I hope you enjoy them. Maybe try them all, make them all together and then try a little of them all see which one you like the best. No pressure and you get a choice. Hope to hear all went well Smile
