We had some on holiday and it was tasty but really boney. It was served in small chunks and every bit seemed to have a little bone in it, say half an inch long. Are there better cuts? And what do you do with it?

well there's not cuts as such..... it's only a rabbit sized rabbit iyswim.....
joint it. rabbit stew. yum.

AlwaysWatchingCastawayAt2am · 30/06/2007 00:12

i've had it in a pie. i guess it is very small, so tricky to bone? never cooked it myself though.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2007 00:12

Anyone seen "Local Hero"?

"lapin".... hee hee....

newlifenewname · 30/06/2007 00:13

I've got one in the freezer waiting for me to decide what to do with it. Google Star Gazy pie with rabbit.

I think you need to quarter it.

PeachesMcLean · 30/06/2007 00:13

So what's the biggest bit of boneless meat you'll get? An inch? That's all we had.

Rabbit is nice, yes you will only get little bits, often done in a stew.

lemonaid · 30/06/2007 00:17

[ (flashback to Junior Lemonaid, 30 years ago...)
Me: Whassis?
My mother: It's rabbit stew
Me: Oh. [skewers piece of meat] I 'spect this is the rabbit's willy.
[Junior Lemonaid tucks in happily]
[Mother comes over all faint]]

There are some bigger bits of meat on the legs, but ultimately it is fairly bony.

mamama · 30/06/2007 00:17

Rabbit is rabbit - I don't think you get cuts. There's not much meat, even on a big bunny. Best casseroled. You can fish a lot of the bones out of the stew if you like. It's very good for you - low fat etc. I just hate all the bones. It's like eating kippers...

Yummy, casserole is sounding good. In Italy them sell them in cellophane packs, skinned and complete with head and eyes. Am hoping to get something a little less "real" but will give it a go. Any suggestions for a good casserole?

Fair enough. Perhaps should have said squeamish food tendencies. Don't know if supermarket rabbits are caught wild or farmed.

I find that whereever you go abroad they cut it differently so a chicken can have loads of bnes in it but we know how to get the chicken off because of that. Does that make sense. ? I have a headache.

Carmenere · 30/06/2007 10:02

If you joint it and braise it in stock very slowly in the oven you can then remove all the meat from the bones easily and make a pie.

Chirpygirl · 30/06/2007 10:06

I second what Carmenere said, either poach or roast it so you can then debone or casserole it and pick the bones out yourself if you are worried about bones. Personally half the fun is eating it with your fingers...it's a messy meal!

There are some good rabbit recipes here I like the rabbit red wine casserole.

sfxmum · 30/06/2007 10:18

yes but it only tastes good if it is game.
mum used to make a stew
if i remember correctly that was well over 20yrs ago

NannyL · 30/06/2007 10:21

yes and it was very yummy

Blandmum · 30/06/2007 10:25

Yes, it was yummy. Slow roasted in the oven, with mustard and bacon.

It needs quite slow cooking and is very lean meat.

cathcart · 30/06/2007 10:28
