Margarine? (but not Flora) help needed with school ingredients list

So I am faced with a list that states:
Margarine (not flora)
however I'm trying to do my online shop and there is nothing that states itself to be margarine - many, many types of spread.....what should I be choosing? Would Stork Cakes fit the bill?

I would say stork if it for baking, they do a soft one in a tub for cakes, and a harder one in paper for pastry etc. Can’t see why flora (or other non-butters) would not be appropriate though Hmm

Thanks - looking through the recipes the teacher seems to be very specific about flora/not flora etc etc

I would be tempted to buy flora!

MongerTruffle · 10/01/2019 19:59

I think it’s referring to a vegetable fat for baking. Flora has too much water and is not suitable for most baking as it is too soft (butter is always best in cakes and pastry).

PattiStanger · 10/01/2019 20:02

Why would you buy flora if specifically told not to? Surely that would be a waste of ingredients as the recipe wouldn't work.

What are the making?

dementedpixie · 10/01/2019 20:14

Dont think you get margarine now, it's all spreads instead. What are they making as that might determine exactly what to buy?

dementedpixie · 10/01/2019 20:17

Flora buttery supposed to be ok for baking

potatoscone · 10/01/2019 20:18

They have probably specified not Flora because Flora is not margarine.

Sorry posted too soon

They used to have an ad back in the 80's with the tag line 'Flora margarine, for your blooming generations'

Lots of older like me people probably assume it is margarine because of the ad!

No idea what's actually margarine these days though :/

Melroses · 10/01/2019 20:22

You need a margarine with a fat content of about 80%, like butter.

A lot of margarines are lower in fat (and therefore higher in water and other stuff).
Flora is lower, but buttery is ok (but a bit soft but fine for cakes - it is what I use - not so good for pastry)

potatoscone · 10/01/2019 20:22

Ooo, double post with half a post - sorry no idea what happened there Blush

Will ask HQ to remove the odd bod

PurpleAndTurquoise · 10/01/2019 20:55

I think as long as it says suitable for baking on the side of the tub you should be ok.

ChesterGreySideboard · 10/01/2019 20:58

I don’t think that anything sold now, other than possibly Stork, is margarine.
I’d send butter and be damned.
