We had steak and chips for dinner and I reckon DH might be having me on, but he swears there was a king once who loved the cut of loin so much he knighted it?

It was Henry 8th, He knighted the steak (loin cut) hence Sir Loin.

Hulababy · 26/06/2007 21:19

Here. Although historians are unsure if it is true, and if so which king it was.

Lizzylou · 26/06/2007 21:20

Aah, always thought it was Henry XIII, thanks Hula!

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 21:21

bugger, he looked so smugly sure of himself I was hoping he was wrong, should have known I suppose, he's always full of useless facts

the more likely explanation is that it's a corruption of sur - i.e. french for "above".

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 21:24

really, you mean he could be wrong? Not that it's got competitive or anything...

SenoraPostrophe · 26/06/2007 21:29

he's almost definitely wrong. someone told me this once and I looked it up. I'd check for you now but my big dictionary is packed

Malaleche · 26/06/2007 21:31

Helo senora - was just imagining you packing today

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 21:32

Why thank you, Senora, you have made my evening! Good luck with your packing.

OP posts:
HuwEdwards · 26/06/2007 21:32

I did.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/06/2007 21:33

dh is packing. I'm trying to get the accounts into a state I can leave them for a month. this is the second time I have wished he hadn't packed the dictionary though.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/06/2007 21:38

Oh look I don't have to look it up because someone at wikipedia has done it for me

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 21:40

thanks!

Well, that's something I learnt today! I was told it was Henry 8th at school.
Have you told DH yet?

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 21:53

Yes he's ouside having a whiskey with a friend and they're laughing at the 'hilarity' of me asking MNET to prove him wrong,

there's some discussion of whether Sur is on or above in French, whether it can be on the loin etc but I'm not listening now!

Botbot · 26/06/2007 21:55

Can I be a big fat party pooper and direct you to this?

SenoraPostrophe · 26/06/2007 22:06

yah, he just doesn't like being wrong, MrsC

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 22:11

Indeed, and as he is hardly ever wrong it is particularly satisfying
