I have never cooked Brussels, like ever. I have no clue what to do with them to make them special...

Any ideas welcome Grin

Cut in half.
Boil for 90 seconds only
Fry off some bacon/pancetta/whatever
Add in the cooked sprouts and fry off
Hey presto, Bob's yer uncle.

But I agree with a pp, there's already a lot of tastes on the plate. I often have the sprouts like this for lunch on Boxing day, when I'm craving relief from the excesses of Christmas day. They're yum then.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 24/12/2018 12:07

I boil them until almost soft, then I fry them in pancetta and a bit of oil. Xmas Grin

bellinisurge · 24/12/2018 12:09

That's what I do @WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx . Greens and bacon is a marriage made in heaven even on a Wet Wednesday in January. Especially so at Christmas.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 24/12/2018 12:24

@bellinisurge I definitely agree! Tastes scrumptious I'm quite happy just eating a big bowl of brussels and bacon! And obviously a pudding for afters lol.

concretesieve · 24/12/2018 16:05

Plain steaming here, too. Just nicely tender and a good bright green.

FoofFighter · 24/12/2018 16:12

Shredded and stir fried with onions and mushrooms, and a little of my chilli and garlic seasoning scrunch thingy

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2018 16:15

Whatever you do don’t boil them for more than 5 minutes - otherwise they start to go bitter.

I just drop Brussels into boiling water - time 4 minutes from when the water comes up to boil again and then strain.

I like them this was with a roast dinner.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 24/12/2018 16:16

Shred and fry with bacon (don't need extra fat as just use the fat from bacon). Add chestnuts once bacon beginning to crisp up.

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2018 16:17

Cook Brussels with bacon and cream on Boxing Day - add blue cheese and pasta - yummy

dudsville · 24/12/2018 16:17

Pan fried with butter salt and pepper.

PottyPotterer · 24/12/2018 16:23

I do a sprout gratin, basically sprouts with cream and bacon topped off with breadcrumbs mixed with parmesan. It's the only way I can eat them.

italiancortado · 24/12/2018 16:32

I cook them in a fissler saucepan (a cross between boiling and steaming

I'm intrigued by this, what is it? I can't work out how you can cross boiling and steaming

kateandme · 24/12/2018 18:04

just like them boiled for 8 mins.i do like veg as it is.it tastes good without needing shushing up

EndoplasmicReticulum · 24/12/2018 18:45

My Granny used to put her Brussels on to cook at the same time the turkey went in the oven.

I could eat her Brussels as a kid as they tasted of NOTHING.

Now we bacon them - anything becomes edible with enough bacon.

SoftSheen · 24/12/2018 20:49

With Christmas dinner we just lightly boil sprouts- with so many other rich foods I prefer to keep them plain.

Leftover sprouts are nice fried with bacon the next day.

Sprout gratin is also really good.

Personally, I don't get the sprout and chestnut combo.

InLoveWithMyDressingGown · 24/12/2018 23:38

Ahhhh so many ways!

Thank you, I will give you an update tomorrow GrinShock

They are just a green veg, what would you do with cabbage or broccol?
We just steam, yes in pan (can't beat a steamer basket) over carrots, use the water for gravy.
Leftovers nice fried up with leeks or make bubble and squeak

JustOneShadeOfGrey · 25/12/2018 01:01

Too many apologies about them by tv chefs, they don’t need to be excused. No need to create more washing up by chopping/sautéing/stir frying/bubble n squeaking them. Like them? Boil for 5 mins max. Hate them? Don’t bother and serve peas/broccoli/cabbage/anything green. Personally I love them and they add colour to the plate.

delboysskinandblister · 25/12/2018 01:32

steam them for 8 mins. They taste better than boiled. Salt and pepper. Luvvly jubbly!

GaryBaldbiscuit · 25/12/2018 08:04

Just put a cross in the bottom and boil for 8 minutes.
although some of them we will put aside for the meateaters and add bacon and chestnuts, may be

Lanaa · 25/12/2018 08:29

Shred them and steam for about two minutes. Then fry panchetta and chestnuts in olive oil for a couple of minutes and add the sprouts. Cook for a further few minutes and eat straight out of the pan with a spoon. Food of the gods!
