Breakfast ideas for fussy toddler?

Chocolateheaven123 · 19/12/2018 08:57

DS is nearly 2 and is going through a very fussy stage with food at the moment, and struggling for breakfast ideas for him. Up until now, he used to have porridge most days but that's become very hit and miss.

Only things I can guarantee he'll eat is toast and Cheerios at the moment. He seems to want things he can pick up with his hands as opposed to using cutlery! Going shopping tomorrow so looking for some ideas.

He won't touch eggs, never has since the day he weaned. He also can't have heavy wheat based cereals (Shredded Wheat, Weetabix, etc) as they mess with his digestive system. Also now won't eat Rice Krispies.

Going to try:
Baked oats
Crumpets

Any other suggestions? Other cereals o can try? Many thanks!

My 3 year old wouldn't eat eggs but we recently found it was the yellow they didn't like and will happily eat the whites.

What about pancakes? You can make them with over ripe banana. My LO hates them but yours might like them?

Cheese on toast or toasted sandwich?
Helps get a bit of protein in. I know it sounds a bit poncy but would he eats toasted bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon? You can get bagel thins if regular bagels are a bit dense.
Beans on toast?

what do you put on toast? DS regularly has peanut butter and banana. cut into slices he can eat it by himself but more nutritious than toast with jam or whatever?

Agree re pancakes/crumpets. If you don't top them with sugar or syrup, they're not super sweet. DS has his with Peanut butter and cinnamon or we make banana pancakes.

Also, have you tried making muffins? We do banana and oat. Or carrot muffins. Always go down well here. I also have a very light chocolate muffin recipe which the kids love (but needs to be made on the day - doesn't keep).

Scones. Drop scones (ie fat pancakes). Banana bread or reduced sugar carrot cake.

Sandwiches are popular with DD and are better for messy toppings eg peanut butter.

Thanks for the ideas.

Going to try cheese on toast (he usually has peanut butter)
Pancakes
Muffins
Banana bread

Found quite a few recipes for 'healthier' toddler versions so will have a bash. DP is off for Christmas soon so he'll happily make pancakes etc. Smile

One of mine will eat anything in the morning, the other is a misery trying to get him to eat with similar tastes to your DC it sounds like, but savoury stuff seems to go down better.

We do sausage or bacon sandwiches, ham & cheese croissant or sandwich. Spanish tortilla or quiche (though he won't eat scrambled/fried/boiled eggs or normal omelets as he doesn't like eggs Hmm). He will eat a giant stack of crepes which gets some eggs into him secretly (I use the ratio of 100g flour/2 large eggs/300ml whole milk and he will happily eat most of these, when he was your DCs age I'd roll them into tubes around some fruit like berries or sliced peaches or nectarines and he could eat them with his hands).

Oh and they both LOVE savoury muffins (like sweet corn and feta, or cornbread with chorizo) and also those little egg and veggie "muffins" that you see all over Pinterest.

Brioche or croissant? My youngest loves a brioche as second breakfast. Sometimes with a spread, sometimes not.
