I usually just do plain scones but would like to try something a bit more adventurous - I have a couple of friends coming over on Thursday and would like to have something a bit more, well, fancy...

glace cherries; sultanas; cheese.
But TBH I don't think you can beat really good plain scones. How about buying some really nice conserve and clotted cream?

Tatties · 25/06/2007 19:24

dessicated coconut

rantinghousewife · 25/06/2007 19:27

Plain with strawberries and proper cream, not the squirty can stuff.

Rubyslippers · 25/06/2007 19:29

if you are doing plain then they are lovely with strawberry jam and clotted cream
or do cheese scones and add a pinch of mustard powder to the mix along with the cheese

hairycaterpillar · 25/06/2007 19:36

Saw a cookery programme recently (??celebrity masterchef) where one of the experts said the best scones he'd ever tasted were made with breastmilk

CorrieDale · 25/06/2007 19:42

My MIL made some last week with cinnamon and grated apple. They were lovely.

lilolilmanchester · 25/06/2007 19:48

ooh Corriedale that sounds lovely. We have an apple tree and always looking for new apple recipes. Do you know quanties of apple:flour? Or could you find out please?
Thanks

kikidee · 25/06/2007 19:53

What about some blueberries or some dates?

CorrieDale · 25/06/2007 19:58

I'll ask her tomorrow and post it.

TrinityRhino · 25/06/2007 19:58

mature cheddar and mustard powder

admylin · 25/06/2007 20:26

I'm going to try making some cheese scones for dc's school international buffet - we're in Berlin and have never seen mustard powder, would a tspn of normal mustard be OK - anyone know?

Aefondkiss · 25/06/2007 20:29

apple, my mum makes lovely apple scones, they are so lovely warm from the oven, >mouth watering

multitasker · 26/06/2007 09:09

Thanks all, I had thought of apple - do you use regular or cooking apples? does it matter, and maybe with a pinch of cinnamon. I have to confess I do prefer a fresh plain scone with butter - no low fat nonsense here.... Might invest in a few new cutters - this one has seen better days.

multitasker - my maw always uses cooking apple, she is a bit throw-it-all-in, add a bit of yoghurt and they usually come out delish... I think just add the apple to your usual mixture (no idea how much but at least one roughly chopped up cooking apple -

the pinch of cinnamon sounds nice, I am almost tempted to give them a go but I am a bit lazy about cooking, I only do what I have to, cook a main meal ...

mytwopenceworth · 27/06/2007 13:38

I just chuck stuff in and wait and see! Sometimes I find I have invented something great, sometimes it is dinner for the birds!

What have I put in scones?

Honey (good)
Yoghurt (bad)
Cherries (good)
Raisins/sultanas (good)
Nuts (almonds good, peanuts bad)
Cheese (good)
Lemon and lime rind (good)
dried fruit - orange, apricot etc (good)
Custard powder (bad)
Golden syrup (good but didn't raise well, I think I made it too gooey)
Mixed with crushed biscuits (odd)
Chocolate chips (good, but ended up more like chewy biscuits)
Cinnamon (good)
Ginger (bad)
Nutmeg (odd)
Cranberry (good)

And then there's my experimental stews, puddings, pasties, pies and biscuits!! I have a lot of time on my hands!! Relatives are my guinea pigs and have taken to hiding when I stroll down their paths with a container in my hands!!

multitasker · 27/06/2007 14:55

I think I'll do some plain ones to be on the safe side, then do a few with apple and a pinch of cinnamon, and another favourite - a few raisins.
If my friend doesn't ask me round again I'll know they weren't a huge success
