Please recommend some coffee beans!

I recently ditched my coffee pod machine and replaced with a bean to cup. I have not had a decent cup of coffee yet 😫
I’ve tried 3 different types of beans. Lavazza ones in a red and silver packet, and two different types of Waitrose own ones. All yuk!

Before I resort to digging my Tassimo out again please recommend some nice beans that won’t be too bitter, too burnt tasting or too watery.

I'd go to whittards where you can taste before you buy.

Try the co-op (where we live they only do one) it's a fair trade pack. Best we've found so far.

I don’t know about the Waitrose one, but the lavazza one you mention isn’t 100% arabica beans (I was a bit surprised by this)
The lavazza ones in the black packet are nicer.

I get coffee at Ikea, their whole beans are excellent!

Our Whittaker’s has closed down and there’s no Ikea near.
I looked in the Co-op but they only had ground coffee.

My DH uses the black bags of Lavazza. You need a lot more beans than you'd think. DH grinds 2 and half coffee scoops worth every morning to make a medium cafetiere ( to make 2 smallish mugs worth). You also need to experiment to find the grind you like. If the grind is large then the coffee can be really weak and insipid, too small and it can be bitter an dunsuitable for the cafetiere and more suited to a mocha pot.

What is wrong with the cups youve been making?

I use ground coffee, but im quite fussy. I havent found a bad Java so far from any shop. Also taylors - after dark is reliable. Do they do a bean?

Our Waitrose has a brand that does Guatemalan coffee , it's delicious less bitter than most coffees but still a great coffee flavour

I think lavazza is overrated

i mostly buy tesco italian ground, but I don't think I have ever seen beans in that range. It is very consistent and not bitter or burned.

Aldi and lidl often have beans in and their italian ones are lovely, as are the taylors ones at twice the price (not twice as lovely mind you!) Also have noted that the aldi range has very similar names/colours and blurb on the packet as the Taylors stuff.

I really like Sumatran Mandheling , and get that in bean form in tesco quite often

and if you can get to Costco I just bought a 2kg bag of SanFranciscoBay Rainforest blend beans and that is the nicest coffee I have had in forever!! .. the flavour totally matches the smell. I hope they have it in next time. I usually do not buy large quantities, just in case it is not nice and I have to battle on through to the finish, but they were not at all dear and I do sometimes put iffy beans into candle jars with tea lights to make the house smell nice, so had that as a back up plan!

I am another who is really not keen on Lavazza. When we are in Edinburgh I try to get beans from Forth coffee Roasters, they have some really super stuuff in and do it all themselves, so you know it hasn't been hanging about

My local independent coffee shop does a lovely Guatemalan at the moment- try visiting a coffee shop and seeing what they've got or could recommend?

I like Taylor’s of Harrogate and someone once told me they supply M&S

We get pact coffee delivered, I think once you opt for bean to cup you need a bean with a roasted on date, pact always send freshly roasted coffee beans and they are very aromatic. Cost £7 a bag, you can choose the frequency of delivery.

Hasbean. By post. They do various different grinds, or beans if you prefer to grind at home.

i did not like Pact at all....I had quite a few deliveries from them and they all seemed dry and stale

I’ve been buying Bird and Wild , bird friendly shade grown coffee. It is v nice.

I am a horrible coffee snob. I'm that person in the shop asking when the beans were roasted (more than 6 weeks ago and I'm not interested).

This is my go-to-roastery for quality, full flavoured, freshly roasted beans. Their East blend is my favourite coffee of all time. And they deliver for free.
