What red wine type is the best

So I'm looking for a red wine to try. Looking for a type. Not a brand but a type like Pinot Grigio white wine (my fav white wine). So what red wine is the best. Looking for something not too intense, not to sweet, not too bland and not too bitter. Sorta a nice balance of everything. Also nothing that would run through me like I just ate a whole box of wheatabix

My favourite "middle of the road" wine is Fitou. I always find it well balanced, pleasant, and very quaffable.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 30/01/2019 23:40

How about Tempranillo?

PickAChew · 30/01/2019 23:41

Malbec is good, lately, and often quite reasonably priced.

Obsidian77 · 30/01/2019 23:45

Go to a wine shop and ask the staff. Or look in the weekend papers for the food and drink sections and check out some recommendations.

There's no best type, there are loads of different flavours, just take your time finding something you like.
If you can afford it, try a wine club, the call centre staff are usually pretty helpful and you can try a few different flavours until you find what works for you.

sphinxa · 30/01/2019 23:48

South American: Malbec or cab sav

squee123 · 30/01/2019 23:51

I always think you can't go wrong with a good Montepulciano for an easy drinking red

Piebeansandchips · 30/01/2019 23:53

Malbec or Primativo are my favourites at the moment. Also like Rioja and Tempranillo.

legolimb · 30/01/2019 23:56

Rioja is generally quite drinkable.

I'm currently buying (and drinking) a lot of Californian Zinfandel. That's quite a different flavour- great though.

MyDisposableUsername · 31/01/2019 00:01

I know you wanted a recommendation for a grape variety, but my favourite red right now is actually a blend: www.costco.co.uk/Food-Wine-Household/Wines/Red-Wine/Apothic-Red-Wine-2016-6-x-75cl/p/150399

Can I join in? We recently started shopping in Majestic wines but we never know what to go for.
The advisors are great but I can never describe what I want Confused

We always used to drink white and just recently changed to red..we always get the tasting notes but that always surpasses me when I'm trying to choose..

Would just like some nice red wine pointers Smile

I like quite like a dry wine if that helps Smile

nandaandm · 31/01/2019 00:30

I quite like a beaujolais. M & S do a lovely one. It's £9 a bottle, a bit over my budget, but I treat myself because I deserve it 😂

stinkypoo · 31/01/2019 00:31

My favourite is Rioja - many different types.

legolimb · 31/01/2019 00:33

Dancing i shop at Majestic too. I like to check out the stuff online too as you can read up on all the wines at leisure.

They always have a Definition range which changes regularly. So one visit they will have perhaps a Definition Viognier or a Definition Zin. Always at a good price.

legolimb · 31/01/2019 00:36

One of my favourites.

chipsandgin · 31/01/2019 00:37

A lot of white wine drinkers like Pinot Noir as a starter red - not as much tannin & doesn’t leave your teeth feeling furry!

OrigamiZoo · 31/01/2019 00:38

Malbec for me!

AGBforever · 31/01/2019 02:17

Malbec is great but quite full bodied for a novice red drinker so I would go with either a pinot noir, or a beaujolais (fitou is one)

SimplySteve · 31/01/2019 02:20

Malbec is good, lately, and often quite reasonably priced.

Love Malbec,

TheRattleBag · 31/01/2019 02:55

Shiraz is one of my favourites. I've recently discovered this one:

Jam Shed Shiraz

and it's lovely - scarily easy to drink!

babypsmum · 31/01/2019 06:45

I agree a Rioja is most drinkable for sure. Also as someone said, a Montepulciano is also pretty delish.

legolimb · 31/01/2019 14:08

I now want wine Wine

babysharkah · 31/01/2019 14:12

Pinot Noir

Narya · 31/01/2019 14:20

I love malbec, but agree with pp that it's not necessarily the best place to start with reds. Rioja would be my suggestion.

oldwhyno · 31/01/2019 14:25

Primativo or Zinfandel, Rioja, Pinot Noir and Malbec are all good suggestions to start with so far.

PosiePerkinandPootle · 31/01/2019 16:10

Y favourite is a Shiraz
