Decorating Christmas cake - help!

So Christmas cake is made and I'm thinking ahead to decorating it - have never decorated a cke past buttercream before!
I'm thinking marzipan then fondant icing.
It's a square cake - any hints, tips or ideas? Thank you!

Once you have cooked your cake and stored it for awhile to mature ( and hopefully fed it with brandy/ rum/ or choice of whatever
Warm up some marmalade, brush over your cake ( no bits)
Roll out marzipan, put in cake. Next day make it will put ready made icing. Decorate.

Should read make your own or roll out ready made.

Prick it with a knitting needle or skewer and poor brandy on it every day for a week. Warm apricot jam and paste over, roll out marzipan and cover cake. Next day roll out icing and cover cake. Draw a design onto grease proof paper, then place ontop of cake an pin prick through, then fill a piping bag and pipe your design following the holes

When you marzipan, use a long strip all around the sides, then cut a square to go on top. Make sure you seal all the edges. Get your marzipan as neat as possible - it's a lot more forgiving than fondant so you can press down quite hard to get it flat and use the flat of your hands (or better still proper smoothers) to 'polish' it. Give it a light spray of vodka before covering with fondant. Use one big sheet of fondant, smooth the top first then gently work down the sides, making sure you don't have any air bubbles. Your fondant needs to be only slightly bigger than you need - go too big and it becomes unmanageable. Lastly, take your time, you'll get a better result.
There are lots of videos on YouTube worth watching, and Home Bargains does smoothers very cheaply. Good luck Smile

Turn the cake upside down so you're icing the flat side.

I swear by royal icing as you can spread it on to create a rough snowy effect. It then hardens over night. I buy mine from Waitrose in a pot but Delia has a foolproof recipe.
