cos have just tried a couple of times and I don't like it

it is kind of gelatinous and sour

dd2 ate it

but I don't like it

I boiled it to 100 degrees, cooled to 50, added a tbsp live yogurt, put in yogurt maker for about 6-8 hours (tried 5 hours also equally yuk). Used semi-skimmed pasteurised milk

i mean it's yogurt, it has worked, but I don't like it and I love yogurt

is it supposed to be not as nice as stuff in shops?

i do.

Dont use semi-skimmed. Use full fat, plus one tablespoon of dried milk powder

My mum makes lovely, creamy yogurt (she's just bought me a yog maker, although I haven't used it yet). Mum swears by putting a spoonful of dried milk into it as well as normal milk - she says it gives it that nice creamy consistency.

um - I think it can depend on what yoghurt you use as a starter. (We have one where you use a litre of uht milk, and a spoonful of yoghurt - no boiling - much easier !).

You can always add some fruit or jam to it to make it taste nicer.

Maybe the shop ones are stuffed full of sugar ?

DrippingLizzie · 20/06/2007 14:41

Great minds think alike, Squidette

throckenholt · 20/06/2007 14:41

oh yeah - forgot the spoonful of milk powder too !

Cappuccino · 20/06/2007 14:42

can't have sugar in not allowed sugar at present

so I need skimmed milk powder then?

and to nick the kids' milk

yep, skimmed milk powder.

Also, when its done (after however many hours you choose) you can separate the curds from the whey by straining it through muslin. You are left with even thicker yoghurt, like greek yoghurt then.

I flavour mine with Maple Syrup or honey or jam. Or use it for smoothies!

Cappuccino · 20/06/2007 14:49

I have strained it

it still tastes odd

only thicker

One of the things to remember is the yoghurt that you buy in the shops is not going to taste the same as yoghurt that you buy.

Comparing is likely to lead to disappointment!

Try it with the full fat and skimmed milk powder and see if that makes a difference.

squidette · 20/06/2007 14:53

yoghurt that you *make

suedonim · 20/06/2007 16:15

I can't be bothered with boiling milk etc so use full cream UHT. I don't use milk powder. I buy a good quality full-cream starter and add half a pot, not just a tsp to the milk and it comes out ok.

You say you can't have sugar - but what about honey It's lovely mixed into yoghurt.
