Christmas dinner sitting in car for hours - WWYD?

My DSil has offered to cook Christmas dinner at my elderly PILs this year. Very kind, we said.

Our worry is, she is insisting on bringing a turkey roll (or crown, I’m not exactly sure) with her from their home town on a minimum six-hour drive, which could turn out to be seven or eight if traffic is bad two days before Christmas). She’s determined to bring it from her local butcher, plus partly cooked sides, rather than simply order it from the large city where our Christmas meal is taking place.

My DH and I are really worried that the temperature of a car in motion plus the long journey time, would cause bacteria to multiply like crazy. But would they all be killed off by cooking anyway?

I find her difficult and controlling in general and that could well be colouring this for me, so if any food hygienists or experts are able to convince me this is safe, rather than a recipe for food poisoning, I’d be grateful!

It's the part cooking that is the problem - the bacteria might not be killed.

Left over food is not supposed to be safe for use after 2 days - I think the partly cooked dishes counts as left overs.

It's December, I personally wouldn't worry as long as it was in a cool box and there's fridge space on arrival. I don't put my turkey in the fridge, I pick up on Xmas eve, and turn off the radiator in the utility room (am I bad? Never got food poisoning yet!)

I get my turkey posted from a posh online butcher. Even on next day delivery it's going to be out of a fridge for 24 hours+. If the turkey crown is in a cool box with ice blocks it'll be grand. I can't believe you've made such a fuss tbh.

I think where elderly relatives are concerned you've done the right thing. Hopefully you'll cook a huge feast and show your in-laws how it's done. I really don't see why your sil couldn't have had a turkey delivered to your pils house.

As a present why don't you get her an electric cool box/camping fridge, send it to her now.

You could get a second hand one from ebay and say it's one you no longer use.

Personally I wouldn't be happy with her current plan, however in the summer I had a 2 day trip away, I took somw bottles of water and beer with me in a cool box filled with frozen cans of pop, the cans were still frozen on my journey home.

Donated kidneys are stored in ice boxes for up to 24 hours before being implanted so I'm pretty sure a turkey crown would have been fine!
